9.6s standing quarter is his fastest time..  :o There's a slow-mo video of one launch that shows him doing at least the 60' on three wheels as it twists the nearside front off the road..

Clearly not running the the elderly 1.8 litre 'B' series lump. ;D

Even 200 BHP superbikes struggle to break ten second for the quarter.

Indeed not ;D

600hp from a supercharged, nitrous injected Rover V8 that started out 3.9L and is now 4.8L, so I'm told..

I would like to see it go around corners. A to B was fast though :o

My recollections were they are not that good!

What I find remarkable is not that the engine and transmission can haul its' @rse up the strip that quick, but that they managed to stop the BL bits of the car falling apart in the process. :o

Andy Frost does it in 6.9 in a Vauxhall Victor, and in his first run even gives his competitor a 2½ second head start and still beats him to the finish.

...and a terminal speed of well over 218 MPH

A Veyron Supersport takes a tardy 22.6 seconds to reach the double ton.....Macca F1....28 seconds.

The factory ones were, but most are 'aftermarket'...

V8 converted TR7s are quite cheap, but a genuine factory TR8 - thats a different matter.

Better off with a proper TR though ;) - a good 4A will set you back about £12-£15K, a good 5 around  £25K, and a decent 6 anything from £5K (late carb model) to £20K for an early PI.  You may well get cheaper than these prices but caveat emptor ;)

Auto boxes are extremely common in all but the top tiers of drag racing (where packs of slipping clutches are used .. guess what, mimicking the behaviour of an auto box)..

Yes, it's not like coming off the power to change gear is an option at that level!

It's not like wasting a few horsepower is really an issue either.  ;D

Does Sammy Miller still hold the all time quarter mile record?

Three point something seconds with a terminal speed close to 400 MPH if memory serves.

Some say a full throttle run used to make his ears bleed.

I've just looked it up 3.58 at 386 MPH.......way back in 1984.

There is a video of him coming off the power somewhere.. he decided that 120' on the back wheels was quite enough and bailed out of the throttle for 2 seconds, and still managed an 11 second run ;D

Yep, probably did all that in the time it'd take one of us mere mortals to think "oh, shi". ;D
