Title: Other than a puncture.....
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 18 December 2014, 18:56:49
....what is the most likely explanation for a tyre to lose pressure?

Two of my tyres can lose up to 15psi in a month.

Can there be a problem with the tyre sealing against the wheel rim?

Hairline crack in rim, tyres not sealing correctly, wheel corroded and not cleaned before tyre being fitted, leaking valve,or somebody is having a laugh lol  ;D

I hear that MV6 wheels are not the best. :-[

Corrosion on the rim where the tyre is in contact with it is a very common cause for "slow punctures", esp if your tyre fitter is a cowboy (which most are TBH)

I've purchased the very latest technology from Ebay, to check that the valves are tight. :y

For my £1.20 I received 'a state of the art tightening tool' along with four new valves. Delivered by first class post so not much, if any  profit, I think.

The M3 does the same.. come to think of it, so does the Omega.  Pull the tyres off, clean the corrosion off the seat with a wire wheel and refit - it'll be alright for a while.. until it corrodes again. Or do the job properly and get the wheels refurbed..

Doubt it will be the valves, more likely a poor seal on the rim. Tyres need taking off the rim and then the rims need a good clean with a wire brush attachment.

This, of course, will cost money, so forget that and just fiddle with your valves.  ;D

Boll*cks to that.

I'll console myself with the thought that the regular foot pump workout keeps me fit and lithe.

I bet you're just about irresistible when you're turning red & stomping on a rusty foot pump to blow the tyres up on a 14 year old oversized Astra ;)

Just like I am when I do it.. ;D

I can't be arsed with pissing about and removing the tyres.

A decent tyre bay can have tyres off & back on again in minutes ......... they're not going to charge much  ;)

I had the same issue a couple of years ago and my local tyre shop charged me £10 to whip the tyre off clean up the rim and refit.

Ideally, when they fit the tyre and after they have cleaned the corrosion, they apply a bead of sealant which slows the corrosion and helps seal it

Not undertaken at 99% of tyre fitters then. ???

Washing up liquid in water would do the same job  :y

I had the same, a couple of months back.....slow leak...turned out to be leaking valve....tyre fitter found it with soapy water....and new valve fitted  :y

Some alloy wheel types are prone to going porous, but fortunately for us, non of the Omega ones are prone to this.

Still going down. ???

I may change the valves just as a process of elimination. I'm not overly hopeful it will sort the problem though.

Looking on the bright side the foot pump gives me a good workout. I now have the physique of a Greek God. :y

I bought an electric pump, that stops automatically once you put the pressure in it, used it a few times on the Jeep, not yet on the Mig or the Honda................. :y :y

Ha ha I had to google that but very apt!  :y

Dionysus is the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy.   His procession (thiasus) is made up of wild female followers (maenads) and bearded satyrs with erect penises. (Cut and pasted from Wikipedia).
