Title: Rusty flex / drive plate. Machined, bin or re-use?
Post by: Webby the Bear on 28 December 2014, 17:01:53
Hi guys.

New years' jobs on topic already  ::)

Going to get the 3.0 engine on a stand so I can work on it and get it cleaned up.

Cylinders are clear except a slight bit of rust but the flex (drive?) plate is rusty as f...

I will take this off before it goes on the stand... so..

1.) do i need to mark where it goes for balance purposes?
2.) does it need to be machined, replaced or nothing done to it?
3.) if a new one is needed do i simply ''slap a new one on'' or does it go on one way or something...again for aforementioned balance purposes?

Partly depends on whether they're factory balanced with or without the flywheel fitted :-\ if the flywheel is balanced separately then all is well...

Only mark it if you plan to reuse it :y

the flex plate is only there for the starter ring .... there is no flywheel on a (proper) auto  ;)

TC bolts to it as well iirc... have been known to fail, so check carefully for cracks around the crank bolt holes as well as the TC ones :y

ok guys, thanks for the replies.

so i can re-use it without machining it as its only needed for starter teeth...... and rust wont matter? and mark it up and check it for cracks also? :)

Yup :y

Should only be light surface rust, give it a rub with emery cloth and wipe it over with an oily rag to keep it at bay ;)

Exactly as Al has said.  Treat it like a brake disc.  Get shot of the surface shite and lube it up.  :y

He would have read the thread title and got a headache.  He doesn't do the technical stuff. His Chevy/gayWoo/Kim Jong Un machine will go on forever.  :y

Do you think that associating Kim Jong Un with Daewoo, OOF will be shut down soon?  :o

I publicly apologise and hope the wrath of Kim Jong Un doesn't descend upon us.  Love you Kim.  :-*

The flex plates only fail when Muppets fit auto boxes without fitting the torque converter into the auto box correctly first.
