Title: Tyre sizes
Post by: rollacorolla on 05 January 2015, 21:45:55
Hi all,
I'm a little confused about the correct tyre size for my W reg Omega 3.0 Elite estate.
On the front are Pirelli 225/55 ZR 16 95W. On the rear are Continental 215/55 R 16 93H.
One of the posts on here said facelift elites 2000 onwards were 235/45 17.
 ???
All four are pretty worn and need to be changed but I don't want to spend anything on fancy tyres - just something basic, affordable and reliable.

16 = 225/55/16
17 = 235/45/17  :y

Any pics of the wheels? Is your car facelift or mid facelift as that makes a difference...

Surely his tyre requirements depend on what wheels he already has. I had 17" facelift Elite rims on my MFL  ;)

Before judging which wheels, and therefore which tyres his car should have, it would be useful to know if the car is actually a facelift or not ::)

Clearly it currently has 16" wheels fitted, so, as Paul rightly said, 225/55/16s

What does it matter if the car is PFL, MFL or FL?  The OP may have aftermarket wheels which have next to naff all in common with Vx Wheels.

Who knows?  I'll tell 'ya, the OP!  ::)

Some people, eh?  ;D

As per my qualifying statement in my subsequent post... ::)

Besides, the first thing I typed was a confirmation of what PaulS had posted, so not at all sure what you and Andy B are tutting for ???

Ok, didn't mean to cause any upset  ;)
Obviously I do have 16" rims because of the existing tyre sizes. But I'm assuming my Omega is a facelift because it's a 2000 model? And if it is a facelift it should have 17" rims?
Anyway, any tips for good cheap tyres? Or is that just a silly question  ;D

Facelift has grill in bonnet and window switches on centre console :y

Facelift Elite should have 17"s, hence my question...

16"s fine, as long as the wheel offset is correct, ie an Omega wheel.

As for tyres, can do worse than Runway Performance 926, Goodyear F1 Assym are good and can be bought for sensible money. Depends how you drive really...

With the tyre ratings: efficiency rating of E or F and wet rating of A,B or C should cover most bases. Avoid anything with a Wet rating of D,E,F or G as they will kill you ;)

I wasn't tutting, just pointing out that the wheel size ie 16 or 17 is more applicable than whether the car is facelift or MFL  ;) ....... some very early Elites it seems had the 15" cross spoke alloys from the previous Senator fitted.

What about speed rating? Is a V speed rated tyre ok?
Title: Re: Tyre sizes
Post by: 05omegav6 on 06 January 2015, 13:27:29
V is fine ;)

http://www.blackcircles.com/general/speedrating

Tyre speed and weight/load ratings should match the capability of the car, regardless of how you drive... handbook will give suggestions for minimum speed/load requirements, expect to see summat like 225/55 VR 16 95 as an example... V being the speed rating and 95 being the load index :y

The efficiency and wet ratings that I referred to earlier are totally different and are a Eurcrat thing... useful for comparing tyre performance when choosing at a glance...

Thanks Taxi Al. The online rep was saying V rated tyres were no good for the Omega!
And he looked up my reg and said I should have either 235/45 R17 W 93 or 235/40 R18 W 93...

Here are 2 pics of my tyres just for confirmation:

The system makes a best guess. Various on-line tyre places tell me that our Smart has 16" rims ..... it has 15"  ;)

Ironically, I found that the 17" tyres I fitted instead of the original 16" were cheaper because they're now more common that the originals   ???

Sounds about right... ::)

Standard facelift CDX alloys, 6.5J16ET39... so 225/55VR16 93 are what you need... but W,Z,Y and any load index over 93 will fine...

Being an estate I would probably go with X(tra) L(oad)

Theses if you're on a budget...

They do do a £39 version, but if you compare the ratings, it should be obvious as to why they're £39 :o

Likewise ^^^

Shop around - I use Runway 926s on the Omega Estate on 16" rims, and pay less than £60 per tyre fitted all in.

W rating for 3.0 and V for the slower 2.5.

I am surprised no one picked up on this earlier in the thread. My feelings on the subject are well known i.e. only factory specifified tyre sizes and rims. Nothing else should be fitted.

V are rated @ 149mph, W @ 168mph

My supplier supplies W rated tyres for V6 Omegas, irrespective of engine size.

Yup... Comparatively the £39 tyres are shit. Fuel efficiency of C might seem better than the E rating of the others, but a fuel efficient tyre has a lower rolling resistance than a less efficient tyre... This equates directly to grip levels... Therefore, by definition, less efficient tyres are stickier.

And the C wet rating is clearly worse than the B rating of the slightly more expensive tyre... ;)

Thanks again Taxi Al.
I think I'll get the Runway 926 as dbug suggested - under £60 a tyre fitted seems like a good deal. E rating for fuel efficiency and B rating for wet grip as you recommend.  :y
Title: Re: Tyre sizes
Post by: aaronjb on 06 January 2015, 17:39:49
One page I saw suggested that the difference between each rating level (for wet grip) was equivalent to 1-2 car lengths stopping from 60mph..

..which doesn't really quantify the difference in terms of anything you'll feel day to day, unless you're rapidly heading toward the arse end of a truck (Al…), as you're more likely to notice it when you're going sideways around a roundabout ;D

OK, firstly a 2000 model (FL) Elite shoud be 235/45/17 with a load rating greater than 93, and a speed rating of W, Y or Z (not sure on speed rating for 2.2DTi)

A pre 2000 (PFL/MFL) Elite should be 225/55/16 with a load rating greater than 93, and a speed rating of w, Y or Z for petrols, or V upwards for TD

Any variance should be communicated to your insurance company.

Any variance should be communicated to your insurance company.
And going lower than manufacturer's specs on load rating or speed rating may cause issues if unfortunate enough to make a claim.

The "wrong" wheels for a given model, but still a valid Omega wheel/size, is far less likely to be noticed.

Certainly, for piece of mind, my Irmscher Sportstars (a dealer fit option) are a declared mod on my insurance.

Thanks for all the feedback.
Why would someone have fitted 16" wheels if the originals were 17"?
I'm really not keen to go out and buy 4 new 17" wheels so will tell the insurance company what's happened. And maybe ask the previous owner...  ???

Last owner probably needed four new tyres and found a second hand set of 16's with part worn tyres cheaper than a set of new tyres so bought them and sold the 17 inch wheels.

I also note from your original post that the front tyres are wider than the rears on your current fitment, that is illegal and an mot fail as the wider/larger tyre should be on the rear axle :y
