Title: Selling Omegas; eBay v Autotrader
Post by: MarkG on 11 January 2015, 06:36:06
I finally sold my Omega for £450 yesterday after just 2 days on Autotrader. In fact I could have sold it 3 times over. Contrast this with when I put it on eBay for the same price in November. A few enquiries but nobody wanted to pay the starting (and sale) price despite my 10 or more years of eBay positive feedback.

IMO   e bay is has become a waste of time for both sellers & buyers.
If you are selling  . . . & we are  talking cars here ,the buyer can turn up , not like what he sees ,even if faults have been fairly discribed, & walk away with no obvious reason or penalisation for not buying. then it will reappear with the  "re-listed due to timewaster" tag  ;D ;D

Sellers , although some are genuine, get associates to bid up there vehicle to reach what ever they want for it, hoping some real buyer will "bid another tenner or so" & win it.

Prime example of this happened just the other day  . . . a  nice looking 3.2 was  supposidly bid up to 1900 quid , seller had already let his "reserve " of 1500 be known in a roundabout way. So presume car was sold . Buyer probably bid well over odds  . .or car was not as adverised  . . .or could it be  dodgy bidding ? :-\ :-\

Low and behold , yesterday a "newbie' & quite likely the e bay seller, tries to put it up for sale on here. :o :o

I am not saying I won't be buying another car from e bay  . . . but it is unlikely ::) ::)

Agreed autotader or Gumtree is a much better option  :y

Pre loved is also another place to buy or sell, ebay has to many idiots now and sellers who get friends/family to bid up to get the over inflated price they have in mind.

Ebay is fine if you use the classified ads, I don't bother with the auctions anymore.  ::)  It's a lot cheaper than Autotrader, but not as cheap as Gumtree!  ;)

The other thing to consider is that some things are worth more than some people are prepared to pay... can't abide shill bidding and the like... all that does is piss people off, and ruin what is otherwise a very effective market place :-\

Autotrader has it's fair share of idiots too, such as the dealers who price cars by the deposit or monthly amounts rather than the actual price >:(

I've bought three or four cars off ebay (not for about seven years though). Never had any problems at all. I have sold one, again no problems.
Trying to remember now...

MGZT 2.5 V6
Honda legend 3.2 coupe.
Saab 9000 and, of course
Omega 2.5 V6 CDX.

Report the advert. They're just trying to get around Autotrader's fees ie it's cheaper to sell a cheaper car
