Afternoon . While traveling back from work I noticed The temp light came on and temperature near the red. Once moving the temperature cooled down. Any way once home I had a quick look and yes the fan came on. I slowly undid the expansion tank and the water began to boil then came out.
Any ideas what could be causing this.
The only job I did recently was to replace the top heater hose going in to the bulk head which was leaking.
Once job was done I started the car up and put the blower on full while I slowly topped it up .
The heater foes not get hot like it did before so could be thermostat to replace.
Or just a air lock in the system .
All the help would be great full . Never had this problem before

Could be an air lock,never open the expansion tank while its hot,it will bubble and gurgle as its under pressure,check oil cap for signs of mayo ,if thats clean you may well be ok and it was just an airlock,top up again,to max mark,take it for a gentle run,keeping an eye on the temp gauge,after 5 miles get home if all is ok,allow it to cool down for a few hours and top up if needed.if temp shots up into the red again you could have several problems,blocked rad,faulty thermostat,faulty water pump or worse case youve got blown headgasket,which isnt a big job really,can be done over a weekend.

When open expansion tank water was fine then boiled up .
I'm going to top it up and see how things go for a few days. Hopefully nothing to serious. But if head gasket not a problem as done them before just hope it's not . I'll keep you informed .

I'd flush the heater matrix and rad for starters. :y

Nearly 147 thousand . No faults runs very well no noises
When I change thermostat ill flush rad and matrix out as well see how that goes .

If its not had a hg change in that time its done very well.

I not done one on the car yet and I've had it nearly 3 years .

have a feel of the waterpump pulley to check for worn bearings first. If you're going to do the cambelt & tensioners you should renew the pump anyway at the same time :y

I ran the engine on mine with cooling cap off and let it run for 30 mins at the same squeezing hoses to disperse any air in system.Keeping an eye on it all of the time I waited until the water level rose in the tank to very near the top and then screwed cap back on.took it for a run and all was ok. :y

Update . Drained the system again and refilled .at the moment seems fine but not been caught in traffic yet . Still heater not as hot as it should be so think thermostat needs replacing .

The 'stat usually fails open so could cause lower heater temps in this weather, however it should not cause an overheated engine. I agree that flushing may be the answer. :y
