Title: lpg'd corsa van
Post by: tigers_gonads on 15 January 2015, 19:42:21
Found this on ebay as a first car / van for the lad.
He still has a provisional but whatever he gets, I will be the named 2nd driver on a trade policy (to keep down insurance)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-04-reg-Vauxhall-Corsavan-1-2-16v-dualfuel-/221658163854?pt=UK_Commercial_Trucks&hash=item339bdb2a8e

1.2 factory fit duel fuel
Going for about 700 notes

Opinions please

That looks to be a sensible buy. Only two seats so not likely to get asked to take a bunch of mates somewhere. Economical. I don't like painted none standard alloys but hey that is just me.

Is the LPG kit common to other cars? If so if you ended up breaking itafter say 18 months of use it would have a value

Presumably the black and yellow hazard tape will carefully peal off.

Note to Admins Can we have a section for Corsas please? ??? ??? ;D

Vauxhall fitted a kit at the factory on the 1.2, 1.6 and 2.2 engines.
Not sure about the quality but it will be type approved with a ticket.

Sticker looks like it will peal off with a nice bit of heat applied.

The lad is in his 2nd year at collage doing painting and decorating 2 days a week, On his days off, he has been out there doing some small jobs for my old customers so strictly speaking, he is now "in the trade"
This way, he can drive the van to and from any jobs I get him / get some practice in while building his no claims bonus up as quick as possible.

If your going to get the lad a van, at least get him one that he can get a mattress in the back!  ::)  ;D

I personally do not think the LPG kit is adding any value to this vehicle.  It's a 1.2 Petrol powered small, lightweight car/van.  The LPG won't save you any real money.

Looks reasonably tidy for the year, however that mileage would make me not even view it.  Even if it's the classic "it's all motorway miles"...... that's fine for a car which is at 2kRPM @ 80MPH, but that little corsa will be screaming its testicles off at 80.  If it hasn't seen a Motorway in it's life, it'll be shagged anyway.

There are plenty of Astra G (diesel) van's up for sale with lower mileage for that money.  Insurance is going to kill him whichever way you go, so get something that will last a while.

Why would LPG not save any money? After all the price of the fuel is half that of petrol. And the kit is already fitted to the car, so there is no initial outlay either.

This has raised some interesting questions...

1. Ignoring the split opinion of factory lpg installs, the tank is ten+ years old, so potentially needs changing.
2. Any certification with regard to said lpg? Has it been checked recently/does it actually work.
3. Only having two seats is a good thing as it should help keep insurance down, and having the lpg tank where the rear seat would be means that the rear seat cannot be retrofitted on the sly. Needs to be made plain though: ANY passengers in the boot nulifies the insurance. But it should prevent any "I was driving like a idiot because my four mates told me to" nonsense.
4. iirc lad is learning a trade, so summat like this ticks most all the boxes... Astravans and the like are all well and good, but suspect that they would cost a damn site more to insure/run.

Certainly worth a looksie :y

Annual service, bearing in mind we are talking about a 10yr old dealer fit system.  Done as cheaply as possible at the time of install.  I'm yet to see a Vauxhall Duelfuel car without rust around the LPG filler (or it's already been fixed, and will need fixing every other year).  Distance to LPG station?  LPG only runs when the engine is up to temperature (and other criteria met).... it means if you nip to the shop to buy a packet of fags/4 pack of beer, you are on Petrol.

Don't get me wrong, I love LPG, I run it myself, but it's not half price motoring, far from it.

I know an Omega 3.2 is nowhere near a corsa 1.2 .. but the saving on LPG on the Omega is presently 38% .. and that's over 5 years and includes all installation/petrol/servicing costs and a replacement tank as the first one had an internal filler pipe corrosion problem. With the price of petrol dropping, but the price of LPG in Swindon still high due to lack of supermarkets/competition the savings are presently around 6p /mile where they "were" around 10p / mile

2 LPG filters would cost about £20 tops?

Distance to LPG station must not be an issue if the OP is considering it. And the sort of use outlined by OP is not nipping out to the corner shop.

The tank is an issue. Rust will be universal on a car of this vintage.

Is that the Koltec system? If so they are troublesome to repair or replace. I have no clue what the system is as all I can see is a blurry tank photo and changeover switch.

I don't know where you are in Swindon, but how about the garage opposite B&Q (near Lidl/Aldi (never remember which one)).

I always fill up there when working at the BMW plant.  It's sub 60p at the moment.

I bloody love all these people running to the defence of LPG motors.  If it's that epic, why isn't your car LPG'd?  (exception of Entwood of course).  ;D

My car is LPG, and on a long run, it is very, VERY cost effective.  Short runs, just added weight to a standard car, extra money for servicing.

My argument is simple..... a cheap to run car like a 1.2 Corsa, the savings will be minimal.  A thirsty 5.0 Merc, it's a no brainer.

If I ever own another Omega, it'll be (as always have been) a V6.  The first thing I'll do it LPG it.  I'll LPG is because it'll save me a lot of money.  If I were to buy a 1.2 Corsa, 1.6 Astra, even a 2.0 Vectra, unless I had the kit in the garage, I wouldn't bother because it would be a waste of money.  I wouldn't necessarily turn down the aformentioned cars if they had already been converted, but I very much doubt the tank would see gas.

No idea where you are with that one no petrol station near B&Q/Lidl that I know of .. only 3 places I know in swindon are Countrywide .. presently 69.9 (account only), Calor itself 62.0 and hardly ever open, and the independent next to kwik-fit (used to be Shell Oasis .. no idea what it is now) which was 61.9 last time I went past.

I was in Cardiff yesterday and paid 54.9 ... :( but there are 2 supermarkets and about 15 other LPG stations ... so lots of REAL competition .. :(

No, not a Petrol Station.  Aye, that's the one, Calor.  On the road that is by B&Q and EMR.

Eh? Both my cars are LPG'd.  :-\

Do not understand your stance about savings. The savings are primarily based on the price of a cheaper fuel. If you had an Omega and a 1.0 Corsa and both did 40k, the you would achieve a saving on both of them. Of course the saving would be greater on the Omega, purely because you just used more fuel to run a heavier car. But you would still save on the lighter smaller engined car. If you annual mileage was less than 8-10k, then I suspect even the omega would not break even at the end of year 1 (based on a 10p/mile saving and costs as below).

Sure you have to work out savings and your annual mileage before installing a new system, but on a pre converted car, it is a no brainer, especially if you have some LPG knowledge and are willing to check the installation is of a good quality. And why would you not fill up the LPG tank? Makes no sense at all. Unless you only do short trips, in which case LPG is not the fuel of choice, no matter what the car size.

In addition remember a 4 pot conversion of good quality can be had for £750 - 800. A V6 conversion like mine was £1200. Entwood's was double that iirc?

For the sake of accuracy.. and nowt else ... :)

Just received a letter from Countrywide .. cost has been reduced to 62.88 p/litre effective 1 Jan 2015.  Not spectacular but getting there .. takes the savings/per mile back up to 9.5 ...  :)
