Title: Aw,B<@@?$%s!!!
Post by: BazaJT on 15 February 2015, 00:20:33
As some on here may recall last year Maureen had a massive stroke affecting her right side. They weren't sure she would survive it but she did and ever since has been making slow, steady if unspectacular progress.Mid afternoon today she suffered yet another stroke and a seizure.Doctors tell me that next 24 to 48 hrs are critical for her,but they're not hopeful. However she's a fighter if nothing else and the towel is not yet in the ring.

Firstly thanks for all the good wishes. Now the part I find most puzzling.Last night doctor had myself and maureens daughters, grand daughter etc. up at the hospital and basically told us the hearse was outside with the engine running and crematorium on standby, well I've not long since phoned hospital for news to be told she's much improved doctors happy with progress and she wants to come home,so can I pop up in about an hour to see how she is now compared to how she was before yesterdays episode and then they'll see about sending her home!!!!? I know there's bed shortages and such but such a complete reversal in such a short period?Puzzled and it must be said just a tad worried about this.

Don't know you Baza, but saddened to hear of the problems you and your wife are experiencing.
Sounds like things may be improving to some extent, which has to be a good thing. Hope it continues to do so. :y

Good news, the drugs they use to tackle stroke problems seem to be much better now in minimizing damage, if the person arrives at hospital with minimum delay. :y

Getting confusing information from the medics.Went to see her yesterday afternoon and she seemed to be pretty much as she was before Saturdays events.Spoke to doctor about this and he said that basically the physiotherapist and occupational therapist would be round to see her today for an assessment as to whether the equipment we have at home now is still suitable or whether we'd need more/different equipment and then they'd ship her home.Went up  again last night  she was still same spoke to doctor[a different one to the earlier one]who told me they'd got a care plan sorted for her while she's in there and they'd be doing various assessments on her and that we're looking at several weeks before they allow her home!Although she wants to come home obviously and I would love her to be home-the dog likes company while I'm at work-I must admit I'd prefer a slow steady approach to this happening,I don't want her home too early for all this to repeat itself. But positives to be had in the way she's bounced back and I just hope this continues.

This confusing info seems to be a common thread with the NHS. Mrs V waited months for her aunt to be discharged this month despite being advised by"medics" it will be soon, we are looking at Monday etc.

My take on it is that the decision makers meet once or possibly maybe twice a week to discuss the progress of a patient. They can't do it, in these sort of cases, more rapidly as the monitoring needs days rather than hours to see that the patients vitals are OK. At these weekly meetings (Wednesdays?) the whole situation is assessed e.g. if patient is fine for being discharged is the home environment they are going to suitable? Are they as strong as they were before? Can they do daily tasks as well as they did before? If carers are needed have they got available carers?

My advice,  apart from being patient, would be to try and deal with one person in the ward. I have forgotten the title but modern equivalent of matron. That will be a two way thing. You can ask about things like if she can no longer negotiate steps should you get some hand rails put in (as an example) and if so how does that work - they might suggest approaching Red Cross for example. There are lots of helpful organisations out there.

The patience thing is perhaps the hardest bit but remember that the hospitals need the beds and are targetted on getting people home after an event.

It is good that you are keeping being positive.

Sorry to hear about this....  :(

But what ive highlighted is probably the problem....

My Dad (91 this year) went into hospital last Oct time after he fell at home and my Mum couldn't get him off the floor....anyway long story...short....he was well enough to leave hospital 4 weeks later...great!.....It took another 2 weeks for the social services to get their act together and get a care plan sorted...which involved a carer visiting 3 times a times a day at his home...so he was stuck where he didn't want to be for 2 weeks longer than needed...

So maybe this is the delay the 2nd doctor hinted at ... and the 1st doctor un aware of how long it takes for the social to get into action!  :-\

I agree, same problem Mrs V had with her aunt. She could have been discharged in October but no care available until February because she lives in a rural area. Care budget has been cut by this government and so you get hospital bed blocking . It is a real and increasing problem of our time as people live longer but everyone keeps saying "we have got to cut public spending". The alternative- care home is much more expensive and not right in many cases.

Sorry to hijack your thread with my rant, just been speaking to Mrs V and there are various problems with the "support" for her aunt. Still no sign of a return date for her to Spain (now five months because of the lack of availability of care issue). Two carers had a swearing barney on the phone only tonight over who should do a specific visit next.

This was exactly the problem we experienced with her last stroke, hospital ready to discharge her but couldn't due to social services being unable to get carers in place for her so she was taking up a bed she didn't need.Hopefully this time things will happen slightly quicker as carer visits were only cancelled as from this morning as she doesn't have carer visits from Saturday morning through to Monday morning as I do that for her at weekends.

Well care plan for Maureen is exactly as it was before Saturdays events. The only changes are that the doseage of one of the many tablets she takes daily has been increased from 80 to 120mg per day and an extra tablet has been added to the mix.As it was only at the weekend that all this kicked off the care plan has been resumed without delay and she arrived home mid afternoon today.Obviously I'm well chuffed and yet a little niggly voice at the back of my mind keeps asking is it too soon?I know the medics know their job and all that but given her condition on Saturday evening it does all seem rather hurried to me.

I'm happy to hear that your good lady is back at home, Baza, hope she makes a good recovery. But, as I always say in these cases, try not to put too much on yourself, you're no good to anyone if you make yourself ill.

Saddened and delighted to hear your news in that order. Glad she's very much 'on the mend', and that total normality is but a stonesthrow away again. All the very best to you both.  :)
