Title: Insurance NCD
Post by: RobG on 17 February 2015, 16:01:57
Is there a defined "expiry" period on NCD if you choose to take your car off the road for a lengthy period or is each ins. co. different :-\

In the past, when changing insurers, I've been asked to supply a renewal quote as proof of NCD, dated within the last twelve months. Don't know if this answers your question, Rob, but It should point you in the right direction.
I would ring your insurer and ask, that way you'll be sure.

Should certainly be dated from the expiry of your previous policy... if you haven't had one for a while, then they could reasonably ask for a letter of proof from any policy provider on which you are/were named :y

Insurance expires mid March but as I use a company van plus wife just taken on a motability car, can`t see the sense of insuring the Omega at present

Ok, in that case expect to have to prove your ncb when you reinsure :y

Might be worth looking at a (very) limited mileage policy, say 1000 miles... that way, if you ever get stuck, you know the Omega is good to go straight away in an emergency :y

It is 3 years, or it was, when I had 2 vehicles in my own right; don't think it matters for a classic car................. :-\ :-\

Had company cars for years plus was running a classic insured in my name with a classic car insurance company.  When it came to insuring my own car the insurance company wasn't interested in my classic policy as proof of NCD, but would accept a letter from my previous employer as proof of NCD  ;)  May be the same for a company van Rob ;)

There's one thing you can guarantee:

If there is any possible way for them to screw you and make you lose your NCB, they will.

I enquired about a limited mileage classic car insurance a few years ago and they told me if I wished to keep my NCD in case of returning to a "modern"then I'd have to take out normal insurance every 2yrs.

It is two years.
Your proof of NCD needs to be from a policy which was live within the last two years.

You can generally "mirror" any NCD which you have in your own right to use on a classic policy which is usually on a limited mileage and it is not your main use vehicle.
So keep using your main vehicle as is with your NCD plus get a discount on your classic policy

The same thing applies if you are coming from a company vehicle to a private vehicle you can use any NCD you have accrued as long as there is some documentation to show this.

Another thing you can do is be gifted some NCD from your spouse, not part of but it has to be all so if your spouse has more than one live policy or one lapsed in the last two years you can use  that if she only has one set then obviously she then has no NCD to use

That's pretty definitive  :y
