Title: Poly bushing the wishbones
Post by: tigers_gonads on 20 February 2015, 18:46:40
Just a quickie ................. The front wishbone kit and poly bushes have arrived.
I've just read the guide but have a quick question ?

Removing the rubber bush looks fun in a mindless violence sort of way  ;)
Removing the outer metal sleeve may need a more gentle approach  ;D

Right, these purple poly bushes .............. do they need warming up first or just add a little of the lubricating grease supplied and ram the bugger in cold ?

Just thought, that sounds rather NWS but you get my drift  ;D ;D

You'll find they just slot in with no effort (they aren't a tight fit like the originals that need a 10 tonne press) but do coat them in plenty of copper ease otherwise they will squeak.

Can the original metal outer sleeve be left in or is that a no no ??

I have to do this job soon, so apologies to Mr Gonads for butting into his thread, but do the wishbones have to come out or can you just drop the front out of the hanger?  ???  :-\

TIA  :y

Apparently the front one can be changed in situ but I have the honour of destroying the front one on a new set  :y

That's the preferred approach to the job, especially given the cost of realignment... Better to start with a clean slate :y

Balance motorsport was the best deal there was a couple of months ago for the B4s - and slow down! I'm poly-ing my wishbones and fitting my B4s this weekend, don't beat me to it!  :D

I wish because this car is really starting to get scary when you hit the brake.
I've been hanging on so I can do it all together  :y
I've go to travel down to Sleaford in morning to pick up that corsa for mini me so you should be safe  ;D

What did you pay if you don't mind me asking ?

My ATP wishbones are only 6 months/8000 miles old and the front bushes have gone.  :'(

However I think that I hit something hard as my handling issues have suddenly happened.  My nearside front camber was visually out and when I took it in for adjustment it was -2.48, hence it destroying the tyre within a week!  ::)

So I'm reluctant to change the wishbones again, but I'll have to get under and have a proper look at the rear bush and the ball joint.  ::)  :-\  If changing the fronts was good enough for Mr Gixer...  :y

Could it go that far out just from the bushes starting to go?

Don't think so.  :-\  I reckon I hit a pothole or something hard.  ::)

Yeah, sounds like you've hit something hard enough to move the steering knuckle to shock alignment - that's impressive!  :D

Is the wheel ok?

Yes.  :y

The first thing I noticed was it was pulling hard to the left and looked at the tyre which was starting to wear on the inside edge.  A few days later it was through the wires!  :o  It did have a noticeable lean top inwards.  ::)

Obviously not an early MV6 'made of fudge' wheel then  ;)

When you said you could see the camber was out it reminded me of the time I mistakenly took my GSi Carlton to a VX dealer for alignment after a front suspension rebuild and they gave me it back with one wheel bolt upright and the other with visibly massive negative camber.  This was a long time ago when proper 4 wheel alignment places were few and far between.  I told them to check it again and was amazed that they couldn't see what was wrong, they insisted that it was correct according to their machine so I threatened them with trading standards and asked for my money back but they said I'd have to write a letter of complaint.  I took it to a proper place (Pro-Grip in Bonnybridge, now in Larbert) and sent a complaint letter to the VX dealer with a copy of the pre-adjustment printout - they eventually gave me my money back "as a good will gesture" but admitted no fault -a$$holes!  Lesson well learned, I've used Pro-Grip ever since, guy really knows his stuff.

Yes you can. Need clearance under the car to work though. So Jack it onto ramps first, for example. Then just undo the front bolt, pull the wishbone down enough to work, wedge it with a block of wood, fit the bush out with a jig saw and metal blade, fit the polys. Job jobbeds's

Half hour aside with a bit of practice. ...and a sharp jigsaw blade.
