When outside temp below 5 deg the twin fans still spin up on auto is there a sensor that's playing up

The condenser on the air conditioning unit is also used to dry the damp air either coming into the car from the outside or from the inside via the foot wells.
If the climate is set to "auto" then this is what's happening.
Most members leave it in "Auto" because its great at drying the air out in the cabin and it helps stop the windows steaming up  :y

I thought the AC shutoff below 5C though?

I thought the same as I said they still spin up well below 5 c this causes the car to run cold

That would be a new thermostat I imagine - even with all the fans running the stat should keep the temperature correct.
