Hey guys, got up today to go to work and the car started then cut out and wont start again. The service light just keeps flashing when you try to start it, the starter is ticking away but no ignition. I had an issue were the sparks plugs were filling with oil i assumed the rocker gaskets were buggered. iv bought them but just havent had a chance to fit them. This is most likely my issue but just wanting to know if this is a common problem that is something other than than tha plugs.

You need to get the fault codes read , crank sensor comes to mind
Although a flashing engine light I believe points to immobiliser issue, you haven't lost the chip out of your key have you?

Have you replaced the key battery recently?
If so, go back to where you replaced it and find...

Refit to key fob and all will be well :y
To prove the point, try the spare key

It started first Al so must have the chip in it :-\ had this with the wife driving once, stop to get a paper then car will not start on return. She had pulled the key apart a little when she stopped and the chip fell on the floor of the car.
-
It's about the only thing that causes the spanner light to flash when attempting to start :-\
Pedal trick for codes but I'll wager that there's a 1614? on the list...
Other issue could be fuel level, especially if an estate and on a slope :-\ in which case it will take about three gallons before it will restart ;)

Dr Omega (a former member here) programmed a new key for me (he's a service manager at Vx Ellesmere Port) for SWMBO Astra. The first time he tried, the chip wouldn't play, but the car would start & run for a few seconds before cutting out. AN Other chip sorted it.

It starts and then cuts out because the fuel pump primes when you turn on the ignition, but needs the immobiliser chip to run when cranking and for normal running.
Seen loads like this when the chip has fallen out because the key/fob are loose. A tiny dab of glue to hold it in is a good idea in such cases.

Thanks guys for all the replies. after alot of playing about yous were right. i recently replaced the buttons and the chip is now missing from my key because they were always separating. Goin to vauxhall this morning to order a new one.
thanks :y

Chip costs peanuts, and if OP has car pass then it will be half hour for programming and nowt else ::)
-
Oh, just assumed they'd want silly money for 'plugging the machine in' etc.. Worth knowing how much £s, then, as I have a feeling I have only one key for my car. (box full of 'spare' omega keys, but pretty sure it's not in there/gone walkabout)

If OP were on the mainland, then a trip to an OOF tech 2 would be time well spent/money saved...

But given he's over the puddle, a friendly local dealer is a reasonable option :y
