Now that the Skodas departed I'm now pressured into buying a new car like it or not & I cannot decide on what?
1. Mondeo - Good looking, quick in 2.2 tdci guise, roomy, cheap servicing.............But boring.
2. Insignia - After driving one I can't really think of any good points :-\ economical yes, good looking no. Not a lot of room inside, fairly slow for 160bhp.
3. Antara - 2.2 tdci, Roomy inside, not the quickest, trim seems tacky & cheap & marks very easily, Economy not bad for a 4x4, reliability is a question though based on the forums.
4. Passat / Superb - Good economy, reliable, drive is good but only 140BHP on most models, not many 170bhp about. Roomy inside too.
5. Honda civic 2.2tdci bloomin quick, cheap to tax, not a lot of room though, I like the style of em. Reliability wise seems bullet proof.
6. ::) ::) ::) Land Rover Disco ::) ::) ::) Says it all really - Money pit!!! But I'd have a smile on my face & a black eye from SWMBO!!!! ;D ;D ;D
I can't decide???????????????
-
What's your budget?
-
About £13-14k depending on the car. Shhhh don't tell SWMB!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
Subaru Legacy. :y

E Class Mercedes estate
-
Jason...Jason....I can't believe what I have just read....
I am going to have to shout this.... OMEGA.....OMEGA :y
-
Rule out insignia cause you don't like it.
Rule out Honda civic cause it's too small for a family.
-
E Class Mercedes estate
Taxi Al has one surplus to requirements.......or is it a C class?.... ??? ???

E Class in plod white... A bit out of budget, but only by a modest whiplash claim :y
Will take 17...
Joking aside, if it's of interest, have a chat with Josh Wyatt assuming he hasn't sold it... :y
-

I know STMO, that's what I mean about reliability ???

Well that's off the list, too.
If you're thinking about Al's E class, trawl back through his (old) posts and read what he says about it. ;D
-
There just isn't the choice you think there is once your start seriously looking. I was gonna get shot of my Orlando after listening to scare stories about parts availability, but there's nothing out there for the same money.
If you liked what you had, get another. :-\
-
That's what I'm thinking STMO, forgot how much you appreciate your car when you've got it. Have to upgrade to the newer shape one if I go Superb / Passat. Might just buy a throwaway car till I know what I want
-
Mundeos can be troublesomly expensive to fix if they break.
Surrey Police have a '10 plate Xf 3.0 diesel saloon being sold in the not too distant future as a left field curve ball...
-
For that budget I'd be buying an excellent BMW M5/Merc AMG and LPG'ing it

MPG maybe a "Tad" on the thursty side but LOADS of room as its the LWB and 0-60 in claimed 7.2 secs :D
-
What about an Octavia/Superb diesel VRS Estate......My Octavia is 170bhp on a 58 plate....but I believe the newer shape ones, which I like even better....are 180bhp and mine aint no slowcoach :y :)
About 195k on it now.....and apart from service items not given any trouble :y
Just don't go running over any pheasants in it ::) ;D

Could you just imagine me turning in for work driving that??? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm a bit biased here, but have a go in a Mondeo. :-X
Some are boring, but look for a TXS model.....nice firm ride, good on the road, loads of toys, and if you go for the 2.2 TDCi then they come in either 175 or 200PS models with shed loads of torque.
If you were a bit closer you could have a shot in mine! :P
-
Antaras are crap and the Insignia hatch has no room in the rear.
Mercs and VAG are suffering reliability issues in these modern times plus the Passat is about as interesting as a hearing aid (and under steers like a git unless AWD).
Does not leave much sadly.....cars are all a bit bland these days.#
Mondeo is a good drive but, they do tend to fall apart and the engine is far from issue free.
-
Insignia Estate is much better on rear headroom than the hatch :y
Found the E Class to be heavy on brake pads, but it has a gvw of over 2.5t. Drives/handles as well as a sorted Omega, and the only issue I had was a pair of ball joints at 75k miles. Largest estate car on the market too :y
-
....

My R Class is 'only' 2300kg ???

I'm 5 months in to driving a yeti. Not really had anything but good things to say about it so far.
it just does everything well, looks a bit funny though.
There's a 170hp diesel, and 4x4 options and while the boot isn't the biggest, it gets huge by playing with the rear seats (adjustable as the front-recline and slide back/forward, collapse and also remove fully)
Lovely driving position, just high enough to avoid dazzling headlights. Handles well, very un 4x4 like. Avoid the satnav-it takes up the space the amp on the lower, but better sounding specced models have.
-
Anyone got opinions on the Volvo XC90??? Looking at the D5, although we used to use the T5's at work & they were bombproof, I don't know much about these :-\ :-\ :-\
-
If chipped headgasket becomes a service item... Not all are 4x4 either :-\
-
If chipped headgasket becomes a service item
That's one thing I do know Al, (I'd forgot about that) we got a few of the V70D's with the same engine on test & after a 'spirited' drive chucked the keys at the mechanics & made a swift exit as said car sat with steam smoldering out from under the bonnet. :o :o :o

Every 50k :o
New Volvos have 150k mile warranties so will last their three year pre austerity life expectancy ;D
-
I still keep going back to the Antara for some reason ::) It would do my needs very well, its just the reliability I have a question on. But saying that I'd be thinking of a nearly new one so should dare I say it be covered well by warranty ??? ??? ???
-
My Bro had one for three years as a company car, generally liked it but it went in for warranty work at about 45k and was never quite the same after... He ran it all over the UK with no real drama, so not a bad shout, but interior isn't the best screwed together...
He replaced it with a nearly new 335d saloon, but we don't mention that ::) :-X
-
but we don't mention that
;D ;D ;D ;D
One of our new 13 plate BM's went for a service 7 weeks ago with a warning light on it, only has 14k on the clock. We're STILL waiting for it to come back ::) ::) ::) Apparently the 'technician' stated that the clutch had 'broken up inside the housing causing catastrophic failure of the gearbox' :o :o :o :o :o

Hey up! He's off his meds again!!! :-* :-* :-*
I did look at one of its cousins today STMO the Captiva - think thats the one 7 seater??? It was MORE expensive than the Antara???
& the insurance quote was £200 more aswell

We'll....it shouldn't be. They were more expensive than the Antara when new, but with Chevy pulling out of Europe, prices took a dive. TBH, Jason, even though I drive the zafiras cousin, I wouldn't touch any Chevy. Great while they are working, but a bugger to get sorted when they're not.
The 'dealers' we're not garages, they were multi franchises who were only interested in sales, not after sales. You could be lucky...
.....well, punk, do you feel lucky 8)

If you're thinking about an SUV my mate has one of these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008-08-AUDI-Q7-3-0-TDI-QUATTRO-5D-AUTO-240-BHP-DIESEL-/251845018686?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3aa322043e), although his is petrol. Really nice car! :y

Are you a man or a mouse? ::) ::)

Squeek!
-
This is the way I buy my cars:
See one I like the look of. Buy it. Post on here that I've bought it and don't take a blind bit of notice what anyone says. Have trouble free motoring whilst reading about other people, who's cars are far superior to mine, asking how to fix their cars.
Nimps :y
-
Squeek!
;D ;D ;D Whose car is it? Just buy what you want ......... at least there's now no tax disc in the window to give the cost away. ;)
-
£500 tax??????????? Don't think I could get that past SWMBO :o :o :o :o
I assumed that with that kind of budget, a measely 500 quid wouldn't be a problem! ;D
Still a cracking motor though and now that you don't have to display the disc Mrs Jason need never find out how much the tax is! ;) :y
Ooops Andy beat me to it. Great minds think alike! :D

There's an echo in here.

The answer to this question is quite simple really, take a look at the Honda Accord, you may well find you are pleasantly surprised...................... :y :y

I do like those cars, but I'd be worried about parts, esp. body panels.

A friend has had two and won't have any other car as they have been so reliable. The only non-service repair item he has ever had was a replacement wheel bearing at 135,000 miles on the first one! They always seem to top reliability tables. :y :y :y

And think of the after sales service. My car is being collected from the dealer some 15 miles away on Tuesday for a service, the computer says an AB2 service. This will be done for a fixed price, the MOT is on top as is some injector cleaning, that I did not understand, but sounded good, will cost an extra £20. On top of this the car will be returned to my home, and with a further 12 months AA breakdown. Service from the Honda dealer is first class, hence using main dealer rather than my local independent, who gets the Mig..... ;) ;)
