Title: 2.2 Omega's
Post by: Terbs on 19 March 2015, 13:53:04
Right....this is not intended to be a 'this is better than that' thread

As you probably know, I am after another Omega, a saloon, this time. I have seen a lot of 2.2 versions for sale, at reasonable prices.
Please don't compare 4 pot to V6 etc, etc. I know the vices of the 2.5 and 2.6. What I need to know is what are the more common faults with a 2.2. Is mileage an issue, for instance.
Are they prone to certain things, like head gaskets, diss packs etc, and so forth. Yes, the power will be less than the 2.5 or 2.6.....that's not the issue.
I would think suspension etc is like all omega's, also geometry.
Any advice would help me a great deal. :y
There are some low prices out there, even on later models...is this a sign to be wary of !!!!

Headgaskets, cam sensors, headgaskets, exhaust flexi joints, headgaskets...

Suspension as you rightly say is common across the range, bushes wear out, some sooner, some later, same with shocks.

Engine is pretty easy to work on as loads of room around it.  Waterpump requires changing with every cambelt change... ignore this at your peril.

Cam sensors can do funny things to the autoboxes. Replace with genuine only.

Manual cars are a bit more responsive, but relatively rare, and late manuals are Euro 4 compliant, which might help with tax rates. Auto is responsive enough, same AR25 as your v6s, but you need to wring it out abit... not so good for overtaking. The manual is better as it goes almost as well as a 2.5 auto.

Oh, did I mention headgaskets... ::) practically a service item... be wary of cars with no/little history and 100-140k under them... budget for headgasket/cambelt/suspension rebuild.

Don't buy one for economy, unless it's a manual.

Hth :y

Head Gasket  :y

Having said that I changed mine myself, so cheap and an easy days job once you get into it  :y

Other items I've had on the engine, Cam belt, Water Pump, Rocker Cover Gasket, CAM sensor, MAF sensor, Alternator and thermostat.

Very easy to work in compared to the 2.5 though - thermostat & Alternator for example 15 minute jobs.

Thanks for the responses.
Al...that is really, really helpful.
Steve, really,  really helpful too.....
Just what I was after.......specific to model :y
Appreciate the comments about manuals....but to comply with swmbo's wishes, it will be auto :)
Steve.....I do appreciate you can do HG's but my days of doing stuff like that are over. I have to rely on others like Al, TB etc. Albeit I don't mind paying, I don't like bothering people.

Maybe it was because I had oil and filter change every 10k....but my 2.2 didn't suffer with head gasket failure (150k) but it did suffer with cam cover gasket failure.....just the once tho

Coolant history is more important...  Trouble is that after a minimum of 12 years there is no guarantee of coolant changes :-\

That does also apply to V6 oil coolers.

Interesting responses...all seemingly running along the same lines.
As I said originally, did not want a war between which was best, but simply all the points, quirks and other things appertaining to specifically the 2.2. ....I thank you for that. :y
Yes I have had the usual stuff with my V6's...diss pack, ABS/TC...Radiator on one...bones, etc etc.
However...from reading through many threads, the HG seems to be a very, very rare occurance. I suppose its old school, but the thought of HG's popping fills me with fear. Yet as Taxi Al says....to the experienced amongst you, its part and parcel of servicing :)

So I have a 2.2 manual and a 3.2 auto, so having biggest gap in terms of performance and DIY work ect.

Headgaskets, yes they fail, but this for me is down to coolant service. My 2.2 is on 179.2k and it's on it's original head gasket. FatherT's 2.2's HG failed at 99k, but that was dealer serviced in it's first 100k (was a fleet car)

I'm on my 3rd exhaust flexi, original GM one failing not long after 100k, new one lasted 60k (from Camskill) - It's also had one cam sensor change, again at around 100k and it's cam cover has been done once, again funnily enough at 100k miles. It's had a new stat too, but can't remember when. Well over 100k though. Usual suspension stuff, wishbones, shocks ect.

The 2.2 is a pleasure to work on in the engine bay, soooo much room. Cam cover is a really nice easy job, as is stat and cambelt.

It's never let me down and even after abused in London for a couple of years and services slightly neglected, I took it to Austria and back and never missed a beat.

The 3.2 so far, has yet to put a foot wrong either. It's had new exhaust, wishbones ect. But it's going fine, it's a different beast to the 2.2 though, much more effortless on the commute. Though not on the wallet!

My 2.2 has a far smoother idle though and less engine noise, you are not going to win any races in the 2.2, but it's actually more relaxing to drive. Because I know I won't win, I don't bother. In the 3.2, because I could challenge most things, I don't relax as much   ;D

Also because the 2.2 lacks power, it saves the rear tyres. 30k is easily achievable. I got 48k out of my first set, which came with the car! The 3.2, going to be lucky to get 12k....

Perhaps a bit off topic, but is the PFL 2.0l engine considered more robust than the 2.2? as i had no issues at all with my old 94 barge. What ya think.

The 8 valve lump may well be as it is less complicated :-\

No, mine was a 94 16valve.

Just lucky then I guess... But frequent, comprehensive maintenance goes a very long way... :y

...and that be why they (and any other 10 year old car) dying, no one except enthusiasts and keen home mechanics would spend any money on a £500 car to keep it well maintained....

Yeah, very true. Did oil and coolant changes religiously on time and had no engine problems in the 7+ years i had it.
Still rusted away in the end though, :D
