Title: The insurance renewal dance
Post by: The Sheriff on 20 March 2015, 15:26:25
Got my renewal letter from LV this morning, £270 laxt year, £411 this year. Had a quick look on the internet, then rang LV.

"Hello sir, how can I help?"
"I got my renewal this morning, it seems a bit high"
"Let me have a look sir. Ah..you changed your address in October, that's why it's higher".
"I see. I can get the same level of insurance from Aviva for £276".
"We couldn't match that price sir".
"I'll go with Aviva then, shall I?".
"We can't match their price sir".
"OK. I'll probably speak to you next year when I'm a new customer again".
"Look forward to it sir".
"Bye".
"Bye".

It's for wifey's megane, including business use.

Omegas are a conundrum to insurance companies. They price them as being driven by over 70's and anyone younger confuses the computer. ;D

Plus, of course, £190 is really £380, because they know it will be off the road for six months every year.

At least I shall be spared that rigmarole this year as in June/July I'll be putting the Omega up for sale-the Jaguar is being advertised now as spares or repairs as it's not turned a wheel in over a year-and I don't use the Omega enough to justify tax/insurance etc costs,so that will be going before insurance due for renewal in August.

All these figures need to be put in context - do the prices include protected no claims, legal expenses, level of excess, courtesy car, eu cover etc. A £500 excess will mean you get nothing as an Omega owner.

For old farts I actually for first time got best deal from Saga on the Phaeton. Swinton best for Astra and Insignia as they have 5 drivers.

My quote included enhanced courtesy car (not a 900cc dinky toy), protected NCD and a £250 excess. No legal expenses or euro travel.

It is all about matching personal circumstances - for example with Saga they only ask for accidents in last 3 years so my wife's fault claim in 2011 is not disclosable.
Others are asking for 5 years.

Other thing which is odd is that a non fault claim can increase premium or increase excess. Most insurers want £600 excess on Phaeton but Saga was £150.

Once you get going with Swinton they will maintain the cash back scheme so after 90 days you get a cheque for £65 on both cars I have with them. I was also looking at Quote Me Happy but such terrible reviews and if you have to put in a lot of data like extra drivers then it crashes and does not store.

Confused com has been helpful in setting a base line and comparisons. I have just paid £900 to insure all 3 cars for the year with full package of extras.
