Hi all.
Just wondering whether it would be a problem to my auto box if I coast down hills in neutral? I live in south-east Cornwall and it's very hilly.
Does anyone have any other ideas to improve mpg? :y
Don't say 'buy another car'. ;D
-
Leaving it in gear will *improve* the economy of injection cars.

So putting it into neutral reduces it then, TB?

Rolling down hill in gear switches the injectors off...
Rolling down hill in neutral requires fuel to keep the engine at idle :y

Your engine's ECU will shut off the fuel to the injectors on over run ...... it doesn't when it's idling in neutral ;)

Did you nod off Andy? ::)

ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz ;)

Has anyone ever tried rolling in neutral to see what affect it has?

It will increase your fuel usage by about 0.4 gallons per hour ;)

What's that programme called where they test theories?
That would be interesting to watch.

You've been told the answer to your question about four times, you stupid woman. Move on. ;D

No-one has tested it though so it's just a theory, you stupid man. ;D

Turn your instant consumption display on and watch it as you travel downhill with your foot off the accelerator. :P

I did that and it said 150mpg. :y
-
Which is infinitely better than 0.4 gallons an hour :y
-
From the Astra owners handbook:
Overrun
z The fuel supply is automatically shut off during overrun, e.g. when the vehicle is being driven down long gradients or when braking – see page 197.
z To enable the overrun cut-off to come into action and save fuel, do not accelerate or declutch during overrun.

It was in neutral though. ;D

In gear it would say 999.9 :P

I haven't got an Astra though! ;D

Does that mean it's so confused it doesn't know what the fu** it's doing? ;D

OMG NO NO NO NO. :o :o :o :o

I seem to remember from many many years ago that it was [at least vaguely]illegal to put a car in neutral in such circumstances as you were not then in "proper control of the vehicle".Could be remembering wrong of course or indeed the law may have changed.Either way I'd have thought the fuel savings would be minimal at best?

Are we still talking about the car, or STMO??? :D ;D :D ;D

It's okay I've got an excuse......
I was really drunk. ;D

It's as close to a really, really big number as it gets ::)
-
My auto box adjusts as i go down hill.......I always was told that coasting along out of gear allows the car to get out of control easier. :-\ :-\

What he said :y
-
I didn't think it was a good thing to coast in neutral in a rear wheel drive car as it buggers the diff, gearbox or both? :-\
-
Best to leav itin gear.
First thing ischeck your tyre pressures are alwaysgood
Then throw out allxtra weight you do not need
Then driving style. Treat the accelerator pedal as something eating your money very time you pressit. E.g. Get off it and let the car slow down onatrailing throttle rather than arrive and then slow down using brakes. Do you need to do sixty when thirty will do?
Find a paying passenger?
Don,t use air con. Keep windows shut.
All not much fun apart from possibly the paying passenger ;D
All not much fun

Well firstly you will not save any fuel, modern cars shut down fuel on overrun, secondly can you imagine the grating noises trying to put an autbox back into gear after coasting, plus, as others have advised, you are not in control of the car. You asked for advice, this has been given in a form that I would expect even a Makem to understand....... ;) ;) :-*
-
Can you explain again please? ;D
-

No..................... :-* :-*
-
Buy a push bike, no fuel consumption and keeps you very fit. :P :P :P
-
As they say in f1. Lift and Coast.
-
Thanks for all the advice. I have my answer now. :y
I'm off to Jamaica Inn now and will drive as instructed. :-* :-* :-*
-
If you worry about fuel economy you need one of these! (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Prius-1-5-CVT-T4-Hybrid-FULL-MAIN-DEALER-SERVICE-HISTORY-/161640233190?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item25a28238e6) :-* :y

My MV6 insist on changing down to third every time it encounters a slight downhill gradient. :-\
This really pisses me off..... >:(
Modern cars come a with a special 'retardation device' called brakes. :y

Well you would insist on having one with the wrong gearbox ::)
Might also explain how your discs last 33k miles :D

Auto Omega is the one to have. :P :P
Manual version feels like a bus.

....and an Edwardian bus, at that! ;D

Only if it has the wrong engine bolted to it... :P

Are the rumours true? The manual Omega shares it's gearbox with a Leyland bus. :)

Nah, not possible... even girls can drive a manual Omega ;D

Saving you fuel, not to mention being in the right gear should you encounter a spin or skid or lose control.
Try a straight, coming up to a roundabout, whilst looking an the MPG Computer, manually selecting a lower gears whilst slowing down will improve fuel consumption.

The original owner of my Omega was a girlie.
After market parking sensors were fitted a couple of months later, probably after one or two little accidents which the ladies (bless their cotton socks) are so fond of.
-
My first Omega was manual 2.5 , as i recall it was a long throw on the gear lever :-\ Quite slick though :y

I'm suspecting you might be 'under the thumb' Doc? ???
-
Only thing under the thumb round here is sport mode! ;D
-
What's wrong with the manual? The gearbox is about the only thing on mine that works! And I find it quite a smooth, nice gearbox ..........

I've only ever driven one manual Omega ..... a 2.5 diseasal, & that wasn't very far ..... as EMD says, the throw of the lever could be measured in yards
-
No one seems to have mentioned when coming up to a junction, end of motorway etc instead of just 'coasting' or braking press the sport button - in my experience coming down to about 30mph it'll hold the gear and use no fuel until then

Manual for me all the time, especially with the fuel figures on the 3.2's, :( must admit the Stick Throw is a bit off the beaten track, but easily fixed, by using a Short Shift and bending the stick towards the driver more, makes a big difference in drivability. :y

Nothing to fix :P
