Every so often it sounds like my exhaust is rattling/resonating normaly when I come to a stop. Pull away again and it stops. It sounds like its coming from the back box . An ideas please.

Heat shield? Sometimes the heat shields on the cats rattle.
I thought the exhaust had been done on yours?

Centre sections both new vx ones. Also from what I have been told rear box was rebuilt.

Chris, if you remember you heard it briefly when I was at yours.
-
Will have a rummage whilst it's up in the air on Sunday :y

Check the clamps into the back box, I had same issue. Clamps had worked loose on the pipes into the box, they could wiggle about.
Nipped them up tighter with ratchet spanner, all good now.

Back box was sleeved last October so suspect it is something just loose.

I think, from Phils description, the pipe to the right hand exit had failed, so was split and rewelded into a new section of pipe... :-\

Just bringing this back to life as story continues >:( Al gave it a good once over and nothing jumped out but did think it was er forgot now :o I think it was 2 heat shields between exhaust and petrol tank. I have nothing since until tonight drove to inlaws after work gave it a bit of stick for about a mile on a duel carriage way came of and pulled up at lights and back it came it felt like the exhaust was rattling on the inside it also felt like the revs where low and rough. As soon as I pulled away it stopped. Parked up at his house for about half an hour then drove home and all was well. Any more ideas please.

Only way is to jack it up and have a listen when it actually makes the noise.
If its internal, could be anything from pre cats loose to loose baffles. Or even the main cat itself I guess. Rare though, I think that's fair to say.

Cant jack it up never seems to do it long enough stick in in neutral or park and within a few seconds it stops.

Ah, pesky intermittent fault.
Kill or cure. Live with it until one or other arrives. Hopefully it will make itself known when you visit.

Only thing I could suggest was that it was a frequency reaction where one panel of the double heat shield between the tank and back box is overlapped by the heatshield across the back of the tank...
Nothing loose or rubbing, just two edges of metal sheet in tight contact... It will make sense when you see it :y
Tother thing is that although the heatshield across the back/bottom of the tank is perfectly secure, the way it is attached allows scope for the front corners to vibrate... This is a design issue rather than a security one... Again it will be clearer once you see it...
Certainly nothing loose and no play at all in the exhaust :-\

You mean the Irmscher heat shield on the tank?

You mean the Irmscher heat shield on the tank?
Aye :y
The corners nearest the back axle are relatively unsupported which I suspect allows resonance of the sheet steel.
Short of adding either a fold or batten on the forward edge to give it some rigidity, there isn't much to be done with it... as said, it's as solidly attached as it was ever designed to be :y

Ok gotcha.
I've had a couple of those though, and not had an obvious issue, but will certainly have a butchers.
Cheers Al. :y

I did suggest an inch or so of this...

...where the heatshields touch, in case that was the point of noise...
