Title: Hypothetical tips for using torrents sites
Post by: Varche on 13 April 2015, 13:30:29
Just assuming a person was going to use a site like kickass.zz

what sort of things must you do to protect yourself?

Obviously use AVG and Malwarebytes as examples.

Hide.me ? If you use BitTorrent, you absolutely need to take precautions to hide your identity. An easy and reliable solution is a VPN by hide.me. hide.me doesn't store any logs and offers blazing fast connections. - That is lifted from the site I looked at.

Personally with my IT background I wouldn't do it, if you must use a separate PC to your main one and ensure anything you have downloaded is clean before you transfer it.

Assuming one wanted to download Torrents, best way to do it is in the Cloud, upload your Torrent link to a recommended Torrent Cloud Site, which processes the file for you normally within minutes rather than hours or days as on your own pc, then just download the completed file from the said cloud site at your leisure, or sideload it (again in the cloud), to one of your own personal cloud storage which can then also be downloaded to your pc or streamed directly.   ;) ;)

That way no need to install anything on your pc or worry about your ISP nagging you for downloading Torrent Files or using peer to peer (P2P).

No harm in talking about torrents or p2p, its just a file transfer protocol, a very effective one  at that, which can be used for Personal or Private or Public use, its when the topic goes off track and starts to include copyright, pirated or illegal material use.

I have heard that Show Box an Android application can stream films / tv series without the need to download using another app to transfer the picture/sound to your TV that is if is either a smart tv or has a chromecast / roku etc.. using a app like AllCast to magically put the picture onto the TV.. or so i'm told. Safer than Torrnts i'd have thought.

The courts have gone to town over the last 12 months to crack down on these torrent sites, Both public Trackers & private Trackers.By forcing your ISP to block certain things/sites etc;Which they have done.
But the people running the top sites are one step ahead all the time. And the people running the private trackers like the one kate mentioned are making a bomb..
At the end of the day it is peer 2 peer sharing and your ISP is well aware you are doing it and sooner or later you may get a reminder from them about your activity.

I've heard that some sites such as Torrentday are encrypted so they can't be  blocked.

I've never tried it though. ;)

As said above, Torrents aren't illegal despite the UK government blocking multiple sites that share legal and illegal torrent links.

These sites now use proxies so you can get to the link you want. What I found last time was using torrentz.eu proxy is the link to the actual torrent site was blocked. Take a copy of the name of the torrent file, (I normally take the first few words only) then add torrent to the end and stick it in Google. Hey presto, you'll find a link that works.

I used to use p2p guardian (blocks known bad IPs) but I haven't for a while.

They are making it a nightmare to download a legitimate Linux distro (albeit older version).

Showbox, Genesis and all the other XBMC add-ons do fall into the illegal streaming services and apparently are quite good.

What about TigerVPN?

I have used them in the past and found them to be very good.

If you want play with Torrents and Cloud Servers try these people. - www.hive.im

A free account gives you True Unlimited Cloud Storage for your Docs, Music, Videos, Pics etc and you can stream Music / Videos directly (not the best on the free plan but do able).

Upload your Media as normal, or you can sideload a URL address from another Site, Cloud Box, etc. Tip here - if you paste a torrent magnet link in the URL upload, it will automatically upload the torrent for you, (Top Left menu/+Add Files/Paste Web Link/.....)

Servers are in Switzerland and Germany, Sites still a bit in its Beta stage still, but works well once you get your teeth around it.

Normal Cloud rules apply, dont store anything that you cant afford to lose or is not backed up, and if you stick with the Free Account, sign in a least once a month to keep it active, in case someone pulls the plug.

Have a play and see what you think, free Unlimited Cloud Storage is a bit rare these days. ;)
