So I've poly bushed the front wishbones, due to it trying to dive in the hedge whenever I brake hard. :o
That's improved! :y but I've still got a screech when turning right which I assumed was the front nearside bush. :-\
If anything the screech is worse with the polybushes as it does it when I stand on the brakes as well now. ::) I've had a good look around and everything seems nice and tight. :-\
I was thinking Steering idler, but I cant feel any play in it. The wishbones are ATP and are about 7/8 months old/10,000 miles and the other thing that sprung to mind was the nearside ball joint.... :-\
All thoughts gratefully received! TIA! :y :y :y

Screech..?
Like a fan belt screech? (Is the Aux belt slipping due to pass pump load?)
....does it screech in time with movement to the right? Or just at a certain point?
-
Strut top-bearings.
I cleaned and greased mine while I had the struts apart, but am about to replace them as the noise has returned. It's been nearly 4 years, and allgerman have new bearings at sensible prices.
-
Is there a gap between the inside sidewall and the shock body? ....although there's no reason why turning or replacing a bush would affect that. Tbh :-\
-
Top mounts were replaced about a year ago with lemforders from Allgerman. :y
The noise is difficult to describe but it's not like a fanbelt, more like metal under stress. :o :-\
Sort of a loud creak/crack.... :-\

The bearing and topmount are separate parts; did you replace both?
Mine made a horrible creak when turning the steering wheel, that would have made a good horror film sound effect. I cleaned and greased the bearings which had obviously been dry for sometime. That's given about 30k miles service, but the noise is back. New bearings ought to last the rest of the car's life.
-
Creaking could be steering box bolts, if all else seems ok. We had that on AA's car.
Initially sounded like a knock. But the knock was the first of a series of knocks that added up to a creak. ...which begs the question how many knocks make a creak, and at what frequency ;D
....if you see what I mean.
Polys well greased I take it?

Yours has poly arbs as I recall...? Might be worth re greasing those before pulling it apart.
-
I've ordered the bits so will fit them anyway, the NS bearing track had displayed a lot of wear which I think is my problem. They're about the only wear part of the front suspension I haven't replaced, at 15 years and 176k miles I reckon their time has come.
But you do make a good point; I'll check the ARB whilst I'm under there.

Poly bushes can make a creaking noise if they dry out, IME. Have had to re-grease mine since fitting.
Unlikely to be Sir Tigger's issue, admittedly, unless they weren't adequately greased before fitting.

Remove the strut top nut and plate then retorque the lower nut...
Allgerman are currently selling complete Febi top mount and bearing kits for £19 a side :y

That's my plan for tomorrow! :y
Nick: Yes I replaced both the mount and bearing. :y

I wish I had!

Yep. Anything from a single thump as I just fixed on mine by regreasing, to a barotone Dolphin chattering away.
