after having my 2.5td for over 10 years its now time to find a replacement but I havnt got a clue what I want.the omega did nearly everything I wanted the big let down for me was it didn't have a hatchback so I added a towbar bought a small trailer and job done. I don't know if I want petrol or derv saloon ,hatch or what. my mrs says not another omega because it was to big so she didn't drive it but always enjoyed traveling in it even through it was looking shabby.
so first step is to see how much we have got to play with and after tipping the sofa upside down we have a budget of about 2k and that's all we going to spend.no 500 pound down and 299 pound a month will get you in a new car for 3 years it s going to be cash and well used so today ive been having a walk round some second hand car dealers and just seeing whats on offer.
car 1
its black its low sounds fantastic its british and its £1999 its a jaguar x type 4 wheel drive 2.5 v6 2004 and its manual and will have 12months mot and its done 140000 but looks very nice. nice bloke jumped on me started singing its praisers and asked me if I wanted a drive.so 2mins later iam driving a JAGUAR.well its a nice place to felt smaller than the omega and pulled very well but I don't need 4 wheel drive and its the first car I looked at so said no and walked away.
car 2
my little girl whos 7 has a little quad that goes in the trailer that my old omega towed so a part of me was thinking maybe a van but that's not good for four people then I spotted sitting on the back of a forcourt a Fiat Doblo van 2006 only 51000 miles £1700 only 2 owners and had been converted for wheelchair use so had a ramp in the back .rear seats come out easy so I thought yeah why not.but this only had a 1.25 dti engine.was very tidy so asked for a drive bloke says hes sorry hes by himself and cant leave the yard but as I have my driving licence and id on me he lets me go out by myself.so seeing it was dinner time phones the mrs up to see if she wants to meet for lunch. well it drove okay wasn't fast didn't go very well but was nice inside bags of room and lots of hidi holes.well the mrs takes one look at me getting out of this thing and just says NO. then she wanted to know what I was doing driving a granddad car!and how old do you think you are! this is from a woman who knows nothing about cars.so I bought lunch[ok I was grovelling] took it back to a salesman who was getting worried as he had my id but no phone number.he then tried the hard sell good mpg, plenty of space, would give me 150 off for no trade in.
so that's it so far might tell her about the jag tonight[wasn't brave enough at dinner!!] and see if she wants a look tomorrow

There is a school of thought that says the transfer box on the
monde jag will be about shagged by now.
I'm not saying that, just what I read, that's all.
For your needs, something like the fiat sounds about right. I've heard good things about the berlingo, but I'll get crucified for even uttering such a word on here.

How about a nice reliable french car?

How about a nice reliable french car?
You mean like the one I already mentioned?
French cars are as reliable as anything else these days. Trouble is, one bad Frenchie makes them all shite, one bad vauxhall is just bad luck.
The upside of this, of course, is that there are plenty of bargains for those who know.

Please don't........ unless it's a quarter of that price.
We owned the 3.0 litre version of the Mondeo X-Type and the bad dreams still haven't gone away.
-
I have seen quite a few reports of transfer box case cracking on these.X-type of course based on Mondeo floorpan with [reworked?]Mondeo engines in them. Also seen some reports that they suffer badly with sill rot for some reason, but don't know if this is true.

It most certainly is true.

That's what I said.
I'm not a sarcastic little shit all the time. ::) ::) :)

Inspite of building cars for well over a century, Ford are still incapable of producing a car that won't rot itself to pieces inside 5-10 years...
Ford produced Jaguars are no exception.

well took the mrs to the lot where the jag was as I didn't tell her last night about it thought id get her views but the jag had a sold sticker on it but she did say it was nice.

A bad one then? Wife's Megane coupe is five years old, done 46000 miles and has had two tyres and two services. All the electrics, incl sat nav, have been totally trouble free. So she has a good one. :)

Undecided, Mr Emd.
It just seems a little bland. :-X

SWMBO's Shitroen C3 is a 60 plate with less than 25k on the clock.
Last year it had:
....a new improved water pump fitted because the old one leaked ... they all do, so the new pump is ally instead of plastic
.... an oil leak repaired.... something to do with the feed to the 'VTEC' variable cams. Shitroen made an 80% contribution because they all leak and if left, oil feeds up the loom & dumps it in a fuse box somewhere.
.... a new engine temp sensor. There's a modified temp sensor that's fitted instead of the original sensor which is integral to the thermostat housing.
..... A new cam sensor is on order as I type. When I asked about it at Shitroen, he came out to the car & said it's always that one (ie the inlet cam)
At least the car is GREEN!!! ??? ???

Shocking. In last 25k, my 2.2 has needed nothing but oil changes. That's coming up on 15 years old and 180k, how can something so new be built so poorly?
Yet another reason to avoid cheap new French cars.
-
I quite like the looks of the later Honda Legends, nice looking cars, lots of spec. Get the V6 one and then LPG it.
Not sure how Honda engines take to LPG :-\

Maybe it's BMW's fault ...... apparently the engine is nicked from them :-\ :-\

Not at all biased, but have a look at the Saab 9-5. Even the low pressure turbo 2.0 (both the 1.8 and 2.0 badges are 2ltr) shift very nicely, or go the whole hog and get a full pressure (high output) turbo 2.3 (Captial T on later models (lower case 't' means LPT). The HOT version goes like hell on a stick.... ask me how I know.
1.9Tid is the same engine found in the Astra, Vectra, Alfa, Fiat etc. I've been told the 2.2 DIesel is a pig although I have no experience.
Very nice car to drive.... SWMBO hated driving the Omega as it was too big, but loves to drive the 9-5, even though it isn't exactly small.
Con's;
The dash is dated... very dated.
Aero Models (like mine) suspension is a little harsh on bad road surfaces, other models are spot on... the Aero corners like a small hatch though.
The steering is, for my taste, a litte over assisted.
Regualr oil servicing is a must. Saab enthusiasts recommend every 6k on petrol engines. I do mine every 3k. VX Fully Synthetic is perfect for the job.
For some reason, Insurance is expensive.
Pro's;
Great transmissions, either manual or auto - much better than the Omega manual which is terrible, and the 5 speed Asin Warner Auto box is just a joy.
All Petrol models are very easily and cheaply tuned (if that's your thing).... not only increase performance but also MPG.
The 1.9Tid is easily tuned as well, just like the Vauxhall equiv.
Boot is cavernous on the saloon, similar in size to that of the Omega - The estate is smaller than the Omega estate, but still very practical.
Seats (in leather (not tried the cloth)) are by far the best seats I've had the pleasure to sit in, including the likes of RR/Bently et al.
The best bit: Dirt cheap to buy. I consider my purchase as 'expensive'. £1995 for a very well looked after LPG converted '04 plae Aero in top spec. Every conceivable extra included.
A drive to Gatwick airport and back (from Bristol) stood me in at around £26. There aren't many 250BHP cars weighing 1600Kg that could do that!

might do that had a 900 2liter a long time ago and that was a good car.
