Title: No more paper MOT certificates
Post by: humbucker on 07 May 2015, 06:32:50
This might not be news to you, but I've been told that the DVLA are no longer issuing paper MOT certificates. Apparently, this is part of its plan to electronically store all information relating to a car (see: road tax!). I know that you can see a car's entire MOT history online anyway, but it would now seem that visiting the DVLA website will be the only way to check the current MOT status of a vehicle.

I learned of this change when I put a new reg plate on my Rolls-Royce, only for the V5C to be returned without an updated MOT certificate. I was told that one wouldn't be forthcoming, but only when I called to query the lack of documentation landing on my doorstep. I don't recall seeing this change being 'advertised' anywhere.

Ah yes, that's true. I was thinking along the lines of when someone goes to buy a new car and needs to check its MOT status before parting with his or her hard-earned. Not that the 'new' MOT certificate is much proof of anything anyway - I don't think there's ever been a document that's so easy to forge.

It used to be you needed the MOT pass number from the certificate to get the history. I know you can do it on the V5 numbers but IIRC, the results are more limited.

Not everybody has access to the internet.

Then you buy on trust.. I'd argue you're not really any worse off than you were before given how easy MOT certs have been to "come across" back when they were fancy paper 'fraud-proof' ones, or the later plain paper ones that any kid with a printer could knock up..

This is very true.

My pet hate is instructions that take the form of a CD.

Give me an old fashioned instruction manual any day of the week.

Sit down with a cup of coffee and flick through the pages. :y

And when something goes wrong ::)

The interesting part of this will be how many people are successful in suing them after an error in the system.  The DPA is quite clear on the requirement for all data held on a person to be correct, and levies fines as well as opening the door for private prosecutions in the event data held on someone is incorrect.  Plus if you have your vehicle towed because of a computer error like I know at least one member of the forum has had happen to them with the insurance part.....

Not everybody has or wishes to use tinternet, so they want/prefer a good old fashioned paper copy.
