I showed her the map of the country with all the different colours of the seats the parties had won. Liverpool, Manchester, South Yorkshire, Tyneside all in red.
She asked "I wonder how much of the benefits budget gets spent in those areas?"

Sadly people relate TV to reality and it is anything but. Consider it an audience manipulative virtual world when you are watching what the author/producer/director wants you to see and hear to create the world they want you to consume and as experienced TV program developers their job is to produce something that sells to create audiences and advertising revenues/licence fee spend justification and if you want to have an informed alternative then find some directly written local blogs and start to learn what reality is really like!
We are increasingly living in a manipulative virtual world when it comes to 'entertainment' it is up to you if you want to look beyond and understand this. In countries that don't have a free press and democracy it is called propaganda. As an example Putin is a very successful dictator when it comes manipulating reality for his own ends. In the case of authors/produces/directors/ this is very often an outlet for their own political biases!
It is your choice if you decide to live in a virtual world or real life experience one, when it comes to consuming 3rd party information. Reporting and history are very like Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. The very nature of reporter's reporting (with their biases) changes people's perception of the event. Once you understand this you will view and understand the MSM in a very different way to most of society.
