Title: do tramlining faults show up in a MOT test ?
Post by: amazonian on 16 May 2015, 22:39:59
My 2.2 Dti estate appears to be guilty of tramlining, and with an impending MOT I expected it to fail on a selection of underbody parts.

It didnt,  and I was just wondering whether anything worn enough to cause tramlining would be noticeable to a MOT tester ?   just out of interest

cheers

Depends on the cause. Buggered bushes should show up, but often don't on an mot.

Idlers can be all but falling off but still pass.

On the other hand, Tyres can be legal, but wander all over the place.

Tyres and tyre pressures both have a bearing on behaviour as does geometry...  There's a chasm of difference between in the green and bang on... :y

Search for steering/suspension testing and fault guide... Be written by feeuto... Chrisgixer has linked to it in a related query in the last 36 hrs iirc :y

That link is very useful, thanks guys.

My tyres are all legal and not unevenly worn, I would like to take the car to WIM but they dont appear to have a branch anywhere near me.

Your a sussex man AL,  where do you go for your setups if You dont mind me asking?

I would suggest thoroughly checking the car over first. As the guide says.

Don't assume the car is sound purely because it passed an mot. To drive straight an omega needs to be of a much better standard the the Mot.

Out of interest, what tyres are on the car?

Triangle sport atp 225/55/16 on the front.
Accelere alpha 225/55/16 on back.
All tyres evenly worn to be fair, and I suppose that might indicate that not too much is out of kilter,  but obviously not the right tyres for the car either in make or size, so a set of Goodyear FI assymetrics in the right size might bring about some improvement.
Mind you how on earth one is expected to judge which tyre to buy is beyond me, as I looked at the reviews for the ones I have got and they range from excellent to terrible in equal number !

Assuming you have 16" Omega wheels, those tyres are EXACTLY the only size for facelift Omegas with 16" wheels.
