Title: Aux Belt Tensioner
Post by: brendan1983 on 19 May 2015, 08:13:04
Hi All,

I have been getting a bit of an odd whirring sound from the 2.2 lately - after much worrying if it was the torque converter or something serious last night I had a proper look, took the Aux belt off and the sound went.

From turning everything pretty sure it's the tensioner that's to blame - turning it by hand feels like the bearings have gone.

My main question is though (as I cant see them easily) is this held on with any special bolts - or any special tools required for removal?

Thanks

Brendan

Three bolts IIRC

Nothing fancy about it, but a bit fiddly iirc... certainly not the hardest of jobs :y

And as Robs pic reminds me... the tensioner needs locking in position in order to undo all three bolts... use the dowel location on the new replacement as a visual reference  :y

Awesome - thanks guys

I don't suppose you know if they're torx bolts or regular?

(Just so I know if I'll need to get some Torx sockets before I start)

Most cars these days mainly use Torx bolts  ;) Both Torx sockets & Torx bits will be useful to anyone working on their car .... you can get a decent set of each fairly cheaply. Just be careful of some Torx sockets if they're all 3/8" as the body of the smaller sizes can get in the way, the set from Machine Mart has 1/4" 3/8" & 1/2" drive

Time to invest in some I think - I've never had a need for any before, I guess maybe my bikes/cars have just always been too old

Maybe your tensioner just needs a little grease.  ;)  :y

If it feels notchy, as opposed to just dry, I'd replace.

It is attached by 2 long E14 male torx screws. I put mine back on this morning after changing the cam belt.
There must be lots of spares on this forum. When I strip my dead 2.5 down I shall have one!

You could replace the bearing on its own tho  :y

Four pot tensioners are different in design and are mounted using three bolts :y

I picked up a new one from ECP yesterday - fitted it last night  :y

Surprisingly it was just two 13mm bolts - the old one was very rough to turn by hand, also I hadn't realised just how noisy it had become...

Thanks for everyone's input  :)
