Title: Avro Vulcan B2 - XH558 - Out for a fly today !!! - GOTCHA !
Post by: DrAndyB on 06 June 2015, 15:16:57
The Avro Vulcan XH558 was out and about today.  Looks like the boys were having fun from the flight tracker  :y :y

An Air France plane passed rather close, but then quickly made and exit - guess the chaps saw off the Frenchies  with the somewhat intimidating Delta Wing B2 Bomber !!! :D

Well done chaps....Back to blightly later for a Bacon Buttie  :y

Hmm. Seems like they've fitted a FLARM to it.

Probably the most sophisticated bit of avionics ever carried on one! ;D

I note it flew over one of its sisters at Wellsbourne.

She also very often fly's over Market Harborough and Bruntingthorpe for obvious reasons.

Yep, indeed it did, was riding my horse at the time and watched it fly over complete with some prop driven friends either side of it. XM655 at Wellesbourne was a later aircraft, one of the last ones to be supplied I believe.

Old news... There isn't the cash to keep it airworthy... Notwithstanding the fact that the airframe is rapidly approaching the limit of its hours... It must be knocking on the door of 60 years old.

There are similarly aged military versions of the Boeing 707 knocking around, but these have been factory rebuilt, which is rather different to being restored in a shed in Blighty. Not knocking the efforts of the people in the shed, but without billions in funding, the Vulcans days are truly numbered...

Sad to hear.  I understand that The Vulcan fuel tanks aren't that big - they were designed to be big enough to get where their going to drop their Nuclear payload, but given that they had, there was no point coming back !

I've NEVER seen one of these flying - there used to be a scrap one close to the A1 Southbound in lincolnshire (I think) but that's now gone.  Would be great to see, but they clearly cost too much to restore & keep running

Very nice - I'll look next time I'm down there.  I assume it's a model like the spitfires you see at places like Duxford

Well the fuel tanks cant be that small as it flew for 3hours 20 yesterday at low level and performed a number of displays!

Spotted it on Saturday, a great sight, could see her in the distance carrying out a shortened display over East Midlands Airport before flying towards us over the Gotham moor.

And if you want to see a flying lightning, you need to go to South Africa.

On the retirement side, the airframe is at the point where there are no spar mods available to extend the life further

Saw it at the Cleethorpes Airshow yesterday, a bleeding awesome sight, and he was being very naughty with the airframe, banking over until she was standing on her wingtip!  :D :D

Came over last year and sadly wan't the same spectacle, basically flew by, engines on low power, almost silent, then flew off a bit like the autobox was in 'limp home mode'... this year roared past, full throttle, sounding like thunder, then flicked, heading damn-near vertical, banked over on her wingtip in a sharp turn, huge circle, did the same again, did a bit more aerobatics, then banked over at about 45o so we could all see the beauty of the delta shape. Another very naughty turn, and she cruised off. 10-15 minutes that I'll never be forgetting.  :)

No need to worry about preserving engine cycles anymore now its being grounded by airframe life anyway  :y

To be honest I think that was an element of the logic... like, we all use a bit more throttle when we've just filled up, comared when we're down to a thimblefull in the tank  :y

It's the last display season, let's give them a show  :)

Would like to see it do a fast pass under the Gatwick bridge... the video from the bridge would be awesome, and if the worst were to happen, there are plenty less spectacular ways to crash and burn :D

Alternatively, it could spend its last months doing a tour of IS camps :-X

I understand there's a static Vulcan display at Newark (Air Museum ?) where they will on special occasions light up the engines & run them as a spectacle

Don't know if a decision has been made for its retirement home yet but Bruntingthorpe or Elvington would be perfect.
Maybe she could accidently on purpose  :-\ go a little too fast down the runway as Lusty Lindy did  :y

The plan is to house it at DTV airport - it's current base and the former RAF Finningley.

Doncaster is it new home - new accommodation being built for it as a kind of training and engineering centre. Including plans to use the accumulated engineering expertise to keep other old aircraft flying.

Lets hope its a good choice as once it can't fly moving it is going to be a challenge!
