Title: Dog training
Post by: Kate on 15 June 2015, 19:03:42
Hi all.

I have given an old dog a home but it keeps chasing my cats. I was thinking about getting one of those remote collars to aid training. Has anyone got any experience of these collars?

The dog looks like a wheaten terrier crossed with a basset. He is 9 years old.

Thanks for any advice. :y

Given the chance my dog will chase after cats.I don't know why as I've had her from a pup and never tormented her about cats, but she'll chase after them all the same. What is this collar you mention?I've not heard of or seen one so I too will be interested in others responses to your question.

It's a dog collar with a remote control. You press a button on the control to give your dog an unpleasant static shock when they do something you don't want them to do.

Type 'remote dog collar' into eBay.

I have in the past tried several types of this sort of training aid....in my opinion they are not worth buying or using..I have a lurcher rescue dog..half staffie and greyhound and had her since they guessed her age at one year old when she was found tied to the fence at a dog rescue centre in in Devon, she is now 6...I also have a cat who is 16 years old and they get on like a house on fire and even sleep together...However when i take my dog for a walk or even if she is in my garden and sees a cat she would go beserk and chase it and god knows what she would do if she caught it...what i am getting at is that it is in their nature to chase other things and i believe apart from professional training there is not any aid on the market that will do the trick....they do a similar item for barking dogs that sends out a very loud noise that only the dog can hear, when they bark,,,,,again tried that with my german shepherd and a complete waste on cash  :) :)

I already have 2 dogs and they get on fine with the cats. I'm trying to train the new dog using verbal commands but it's difficult when he instinctively goes to chase the cats.

Hound dogs (and Dr Opti) have the basic instinct of chasing (hunting) anything that is small and furry and pussies fit into that category. ::) ::) ::) ::)

Must type faster.

Hi Kate, I bought two because our Jack Russells dashed to the letter box barking like hell whenever the Postman appeared ::)
When the collars arrived I tried one out on myself and even on the low setting the pain was shocking (no pun intended)! No way would I subject an animal to that kind of torture, so they went in the bin where they belonged!
Try stroking the dog more & your pussy less, it's probably jealous! ;D ;)

Mrs Slocombe would often speak of her pussy, about how wet it was.

Cats don't like the rain, you see. :-* :-*
