Hi all,
My dads 2.2 Petrol Auto (Face Lift - W Plate) sounds a bit rough when start. Seems fine when run a little.
I was perhaps going to pop a new set of plugs in it and pop some new HT leads on as starter for 10 to eliminate that possibility ? Also, as perhaps going to clean the MAF ? Assume this easy to do and what best to clean with ???
Any thoughts suggestions as what could be or best place / thing to check ??
Also what plugs and leads are recommended ? GM plugs I guess should be fine (use them on my V6 mfl) but assume any pattern HT lead set would be OK ?
Thanks in advance,
Andy.

has it got leads as normaly 2.2 have coil pack with the 4 plug rubbers connected to it......is it difficult to start as 2.2 suffer from cam shaft sensor problems.
-
As regards to cleaning the maf it is not generaly recommended as they are so delicate...fit genuine gm plugs if you feel they are better and then you will be ok with them,,... :y
-
OK cheers. Will pop some genuine GM plugs in.
I recall now I think she had new coil pack and camshaft sensor a couple of years ago.
Will change plugs and give her "Italian Tune up" once all warmed up 😉.

No HT leads on a 2.2 - coil pack above plugs - this can be a source of "rough" running and sensitive to heat
Changing plugs best place to start
DONT clean the MAF more chance of ruining it than improving it
Best place to start is cleaning the throttle body - guide here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90528.0 (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90528.0)
Make sure there are no vac leaks - lightly spray brake cleaner around inlet/brake servo area and EGR (rear of head) if there is a change in engine "note" you have a leak.
Cam sensor can effect running of car and can be sensitive to heat
HTH for now

edit should type faster ::)
edit 2 was new cam sensor genuine GM

Was the cam sensor a genuine unit as cheap ones are a waste of money...and they are quite a regular problem.....you could look on the maintenance forum and see how to clean the throttle body by taking off and getting rid of the carbon build up and also the engine breathers as i have just done mine and i was amazed how much crap there was in them...you will need a new gasket, but it is all in the write up on here and very easy to do,,, :y

Thanks all. Cam sensor was I understood genuine GM as mechanic who normally sorts car recommended for same reason :y
Will check out the few bits mentioned :y
Fingers crossed.

As above, fresh plugs. Check for water/oil. Pop throttle body off, give it a good clean. Then go from there :y
-
If it gets quieter as it warms up, I would be suspecting a noisy camlifter or loose/cracked exhaust manifold.
-
Mines doing the same more of a ticking on mine having the cam belt and all the tensioned changed Tuesday also booking it in for oil change as it's been sitting since April and only done 2000 miles in the last two years.

Was there gasket required for the throttle body ? And are any special tools needed to pop coil pack off to change plugs ????

There is a paper gasket under the throttle body, I've been using same one ever since I bought the car in 2005.
Coil back, nope, just a torx bit to undo the bolts for the coil back. Just unplug the loom at the back and slide off the black Ecotec cover. :y
-
they are notorious for exhaust manifold cracks....on start up sounds a bit noisy and as it warms up gets a lot quieter :y
-
Ok cheers for that. Any place in particular to look on manifold ? I shall check that 1st before pop any plugs in.
Plugs look like sit deep in the well. Any special tools needed to get them out and in easy ?
Thanks in advance.
Andy.

Yep, exhaust manifold is certainly under suspicion.
If it's misfiring after startup and losing coolant it's possible that the head gasket has gone, again not an uncommon problem on a 2.2.
Breathers are worth cleaning as they do block up and cause running issues on the 4 pots.
Failing the above, it's possible that a mixture problem is causing the mixture to be incorrect until it warms up and goes closed loop. Would need some live data to confirm that.

Thank you all for sound advice :y
Will check her out Saturday give breathers clean and check manifold. Any guide on OFF for breathers on 2.2 (as mine is the V6 :y)
Hopefully I shall have her running sweet for when my dad gets out of hospital :y, but he won't be out for 3+ week at least :'(.
I shall enjoy the vast vacant and unused space under the bonnet then Saturday when working on his car due to the 2 missing Cylinders 8).

Cheers. Need torx socket :( any idea what size ? Throttle body on inspection is grubby and black and oiley under butterfly.

Normal for gunge in throttle body, the important bit is making sure the small hole is clear and no blockage in the pipes, the rest is just good maintenance. You can do it in the car, without disconnecting the coolant pipes. Thing is all these things are good maintenance for economy and emissions and not for cold, rough running
I still would not expecting any resolution of the rough running on cold until new cam sensor and also pls note that the EGR is more influential during the warming period
Good luck
Phil
