So, I've seen a little discussion on this in the past. My question is has anyone successfully installed a V8 engine into an Omega for road (as opposed to racing) use. I'm of the view that a 350 Chevy engine & autobox should be a reasonable fit, and think the car would be a real wolf in sheep(ish) clothing. Any ideas ?

That gixer bloke is mid fitting a LS1 V8, but taking his sweet time about it. :D

Keen to hear more...

Stick with an LS1 as it's been done before.
From what I've read on here I believe the steering / steering box positioning is the biggest headache

Old account mv8.com on here somewhere.
Currently, we'll sort of currently looking at a rack to get round the steering box issues. Which brings its own problems. Ls1 and
Well here you go

There are a few ls1 conversions but all use a manual and are left hand drive, except one UK mv6 I've seen on line. Left hand drive means the left bank of cylinders are slightly further forward due to the con rod offset, so gives slightly more room.
Not seen an auto conversion. Which is odd because the auto is smaller than the t56 manual believe it or not. And the auto is tight enough.

Interesting discussion & not as easy as I was hoping for

It has been done with a box. The lingerfelter conversion was probably the simplest, but again was a left hooker, and very very custom headers. The exhaust exit/steering box interface is the pita with the whole idea. GM headers for the project show a completely flat exit pipe on pot 7(?) as a result. UK cars would be pot 8 though. If I have that right?
I doubt the UK would have got a right hand drive v8 even if GM hadn't pulled the plug on Opels efforts.

Who is the guy with the 2jz engine, last I heard it was getting a turbo conversion. IMO it seems a better fit and still huge reliable power.
-
Just a thought. If V8's are too big to go in the engine bay of a RHD Omega, why not put a more powerful V6 in?
They would be very expensive to buy being so new but the GM LF3 boasts 420 BHP and looks very compact especially as it is twin turbo.

Maybe there are other older V6's about that would have less loom and ECU issues.?
-
The platform was designed with a straight 6 in mind, and it shows, really.
Most V engines have a 60 or 90 degree "V" angle, with the GM V6 being unusually compact due to its' 54 degree V angle, so finding a more compact V6 will be a challenge. The 90 degree V8 is only a contender because, with 2 valves per cylinder and pushrods, the heads are much smaller.
The problem is, straight 6 engines are becoming a thing of the past now all modern engine designs are centred around FWD shopping cars. ::)
The JZ engine would be an interesting route. <shuddder> BMW </shudder> have some interesting straight 6 designs too.

It fits fine without the steering box. Trouble there is, obviously another steering solution has to be found, almost from scratch.
I have a plan, but not the time to get on with the bloody thing. :(

So, what about fitting a Turbo then (to a petrol engine obviously) - has anyone contemplated/done this ?

Couple of four pots. V6's don't take much more power allegedly before the bottom end gives up.

Legend has it that the NI police had some made by Courtenay, but they didn't last very long before having a temper tantrum. Bottom ends and general overheating, if memory serves...

If you want more power get a Monaro or VXR8 :)

So no point and Son Tunnie getting one then, aye ;D all about economy these v8's apparently. ::)

But I want an estate. The MG ZT-T 260 appealed (Ford 4.6 V8 engine), but they're VERY expensive. I do like the Monaro though - a 2 door Omega as I tell the wife

Sadly the commadore Estate never made it to the UK in any form, where the saloon did as the vxr8. Afaik there's is only one Tourer in the country. Owner is on the hsv forum.

Apparently the Blue is much more vibrant than the pics suggest.
But point is, I want one. Badly. But not so bad that I'd pay for a new one and an extra 5k to import it. Which means importing a used one privately. :(

...and a YouTube link. Just got good measure.

You're telling me! They somehow hid a 4 pot in there, and a giant sound system that gives you a really convincing V8 soundtrack, while it couldn't pull the skin off a wet rice pudding. ;D

Actually, throw in a few head gasket failures and some SU carbs and they'd have completely recreated the traditional Rover V8 experience. ;D

Looks fantastic - I'd like one too
