Title: She's cooked the car
Post by: Vamps on 04 July 2015, 16:43:15
OK car overheated in Harrogate, water topped up and drove back to Ripon, where we are at the moment. Car running fine, but when the key is removed the battery light comes on. Fuse/relay box on top of the battery very hot, bonnet up and leaving to cool; any thoughts?............. :-\ :-\

A short somewhere? If it starts and drives, get the bugger home and then worry about it. If not.....I hope you are a member of a recovery service.

If the alternator/battery light remains lit with the engine off then it is going to flatten the battery overnight.

It's just an alternator ffs ;D

In fact it's probably just the diode pack on the back of it. (Ime anyway, might be something else though )

If a GM V6, overheating plus alternator light, check aux belt ;).

A loose or missing aux belt would cause overheating and loss of charge (along with no power steering or air con) but why would the alternator light stay lit with the engine off?

She went out in it this morning, came back in saying her car was buggered, a number of lights illuminated when on, ign light on when off.

I followed her home and it was clear that the car was running off the battery, I could tell from the brightness of brake lights / indicators. I managed to make a hands free phone call to Miss Vamps, telling her to ask Mum to switch off any fans - message back, everything has gone off speedo and all gauges; It is my understanding that this now is a faulty alternator.

Oh how I prayed as we went through the long roadworks on the A1..........

Almost home, less than 3 miles to go, and all stop..... :( :( Everything loaded into my car. Shortly afterwards car recovered by my local independent, back to his place for repair. At least it is in safe hands now.......... ;) ;)

As said, I suspect the Alternator, seemingly coincidental to cooking, which was due to insufficient coolant in the car.............. ::) ::)

It's a very common problem with omegas, they commit suicide after about fifteen years.

So there is no engine overheating, just a duff report from the people in the car?

Yes, it did overheat, someone from a hotel in Harrowgate topped it up with water, even Miss Vamps could not unscrew the filler cap........Pure coincidence........... ;) ;)
