Title: Time to top up the police pension fund
Post by: tigers_gonads on 19 July 2015, 12:16:25
The title was shall we say, tongue in cheek before anybody gets on there high horse  ::)

The good old "speed kills" argument no doubt  :(

http://www.driving.co.uk/news/just-1mph-too-fast-and-youre-nicked-new-zero-tolerance-approach-to-speeding/?CMP=Spklr-_-Editorial-_-FBPAGE-_-SundayTimesDriving-_-20150714-_-Driving-_-208307397&linkId=15515387

I take it they will be setting up these traps outside schools, in residential areas where kids are playing or around pedestrian shopping areas where you have lots of dozy shoppers / women with pushchairs who have never learnt the green cross code  ;)

Nah, didn't think so  >:(

Whilst I'm no angel, I do abide by 30 and 40 mph limits in general. What concerns me though is that people will now be staring at the speedo (exactly as the article suggests police want) instead of watching the road :o

But I do recognise that something needs to be done

Agree whole heartedly with mostly keeping to the 30 / 40ish limit comments above
The thing that pishes me off is the general lack of situational awareness of drivers nowdays.

Drivers cannot be taught situational awareness imo
Its something you learn with miles and experience.
Imho, nobody can safely drive any vehicle safely unless they are reasonably relaxed, and aware of there surroundings.
You just can't do that if your constantly scanning your instruments / desperately keeping your speed on or bellow whatever number the government of the day says is the speed that kills.
Surly it must be safer if plod are allowed to give discretion in all areas. Not just motorways  :)

When the "law" is so rigidly applied as in the above article, all that breeds is paranoia and will cause accidents imo

This comment at the end of the article will just put more money in the legal eagle pockets

Nick Freeman, the lawyer nicknamed “Mr Loophole”, who writes for The Sunday Times, warns that any new fines would be open to challenge.

“The first thing is the legal principle called de minimis, which means it’s so slight that it’s not really infringing the law,” he said. “At 51mph, 52mph [on a 50mph road], you are certainly de minimis. It would be an enormous waste of taxpayers’ money to pursue this type of very trivial prosecution.”

Apparently they just tried this in New Zealand with a consequential increase in road deaths and injuries, due to people being fixated on their speedos, so they have now abandoned it. :y

Me too, and when I pointed out that I used my cruise control wherever suitable to comply with the speed limit, I was advised, by the dozy cow skilled m/c driving instructor taking a recent speed awareness course, that to do so 'would impair my concentration'! ;D ;D ;D

What other "Law" in any other walk of life is policed so rigorously policed and prosecuted - or should that be persecuted?
The laws relating to cyclists and their behaviour - jumping red lights, riding on pavements, etc., are routinely ignored, not least when thay actually cycle past beat bobbies on the pavement!
Fair treatment for all?

Ron.

It also assumes that speedos underread by up to 10% and there is no guarantee of that especially with old vehicles and even more so with classic ones. :( :( :(

You know the entrapment opportunities on downhill sections are going to go up as easing off the throttle but going 1mph over and kerching. We get that with bridges over railways etc. around here already. >:( >:( >:(

I'm not surprised that the accident rate went up is New Zealand as we all have a finite amount of concentration for checking all sources of information and limited information processing bandwidth and if the watching speedo and concentrating on speed goes up, then it will be to the detriment of other things like little Johnny mainly hidden by parked vans where he is semi-paying attention to traffic but concentrating on joining his friends across the road. The second you could of seen him lean out slightly so he was not completely hidden by the vans and started defensively braking you were busy checking your speedo, bang as he runs out in front of you. :( :o :o :o :o

I can say that the general standard of driving I witnessed in April was abysmal... And in Australia.

People regularly moan about driving standards in Britain, but I think that our standards are up there with the best to be honest.  :y

I've driven in a lot of different countries around the world and have been in Houston for nearly a month.  The general standard of driving here is shockingly bad!  :o  ::)
