My local garage have been changing a the head gasket and have called today to say that, having removed and skimmed the head they have now re-assembled
Now they come to timing it all up and have found that the engine won't turn - I assume it stops just before TDC.
Is it possible to have removed too much material from the head thus bringing the head down so low that the pistons foul???
Or am I seeing the worst and it's just a valve in the wrong position. I guess basically he question is - how much room is there??

Sounds like they had the crank in the wrong place when they refitted the head...

Simply put, yes but if it is then the engineer has done far more damage to the head than that ;)
As above, I'd say they haven't timed it right :y

What James means is the pistons should be parked half way up the bores for this job. Then head can be replaced, head bolts torqued up, camshafts refitted and torqued up, then cam sprockets can be refitted and cams set for no. 1 TDC. Then crank can safely be returned to no.1 TDC and cam belt fitted and timed.
Head must not be fitted with crank at TDC, otherwise there is an excellent chance of pushing a valve into a piston as the camshaft is tightened down.
