Swmbo's fiesta threw up a fault the other day & I've just read the code and its
C1142 Wheel Speed Sensor RF Tone Ring Tooth Missing Fault
I assume either the ABS sensor is fubared or the reluctor ring has either cracked or got teeth missing????
Tia.

Donald ducked reluctor ring, pretty common sadly.

Yep,outer joint corrodes under the reluctor ring and splits it open so the sensor thinks a tooth is missing,on Renault complete shafts I have successfully cleaned the corrosion and JB welded the reluctor ring back into place making sure that the gap is closed up,not sure I'd bother on a Fiesta though when the joints are only pence new :y

Looked at the Ford forums and it seems if you clean the surface free of the rust you can heat a new ring up & place it on the shaft where it will shrink fit? Does this sound doable??? or would it be easier just to renew the shaft????

You can renew just the outer joint on a Fiesta, euro parts are probably about 30 quid for the joint kit with boot

Mercedes only supply a complete drive shaft for a smart at £200+ each but I bought a pair of reluctor rings off t'interweb from a place in Chorley for £10 inc postage. I suppose I could have heated them to shrink fit them, but I used the knock 'em on method & loctite.

I did just the ring on my mrs' Kalos. The old one was brittle and easily tapped off. Cleaned shaft with wire brush, got new ring nice and hot, tap it on with a drift. Boom :y

You'll need a new bolt from ford too as its not a normal bolt

This is VERY important, as the shoulder of the bolt is necessary to retain the groove in the ballpoint.
I have recovered several cars where the ordinary bolt hasn't been enough to do that, and the joint has pulled out of the hub assembly.

I know Henry, little walk up to the Ford garage Monday, but have to get the B****Y think out first, steeped in penetrating fluid over-night & still won't come out >:( >:( >:( The head end is a star & that is not moving, not really one for belting the **** out of things but this is really testing my patience!

Chisel in between the by head and the knuckle and apply a couple of whacks to shock it a little. Then, going from the other side, a large blunt punch and it will come out. It is the face of the bolt hiding the worst of it, along with a little gap where the pinch is allowing dirt to build up in the gap. I have had to remove loads in my time working with Fords. When reassembling the new bolt, I use a small amount of copperslip on the inside of the bolt head and along the smooth shoulder. Comes out nice and easy then.

Hallelujah!!!!
Bl***Y thing is out!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o

Well you learn something new every day ::) ::) The reluctor ringisn't on the outer CV joint, its on the inner face of the bloody wheel bearing & its completely fubared!!! >:( >:( >:( Now to go get a new wheel bearing & try to press out the old one & carefully press in the new one without damaging the ring on the back of it. Nothings ever easy :-\ :'(

And a trick is to put a paper clip onto the side of the bearing as it will remind you which side is magnetised when you put it down to do something as you have to destroy them to remove them. Used to see it all the time with Focus'
