Oh yes. It was fantastic coming down Sutton Bank. ;D

I heard the Fish n Chips are good in Whitby. :-\

Lots of memories of Sutton Bank. Some good and some bad.
Next time you go to God's own country try Rosedale Chimney. I once saw a group of Austin 7's go up .

They are!!!.................. :y :y :y
STEMO, you should have given us a shout, called into our, summer home, for a coffee; and we could have talked about some of the other 'oofers'.......... ;) ;) :y

Lacking a turbo? :)

A turbo and the necessary horses. But.... Everything in life is a compromise, and I am getting 40+mpg around town so quite good for a petrol estate.
It did surprise me on the motorway. No problem accelerating up to speed and is very quiet at around 80. Tyre noise is quite bad though.
-
If its still got the original Bridgestone Potenzas fitted then the tyre noise is not great.....nor is grip but when they wear out a better tyre makes a huge difference

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the M1 north of Leeds, Mark, but it has been surfaced with something that resembles concrete. It is also evenly uneven, if you know what I mean, kind of wavy instead of flat. The noise is horrendous with any tyre, but as soon as you hit the resurfaced section afterwards, it's like someone has turned your hearing aid off ;D
Considering the list price of these (even base model) astras, I would have thought they would have tried a bit harder with sound insulation and other niceties. I guess they know no one is going to pay full list price, but still........
Mine is shod with Michelin energy, by the way, and they must have been on from new as they have about 5mm left and the car has only done 12000 miles.
Just a thought....I have got 37psi all round in them, maybe I'll drop it a bit.

Sound deadening on the SE we had was excellent, maybe there is less on the poverty spec

This type of surface really pisses me off. I imagine that it's inexpensive in comparison with nice smooth tarmac and that is why we find it everywhere these days. :-\
Rest assured it is not just your Astra that is noisy on this surface.
I believe it was Paddymurphy construction who were given the contract. :)

Getting a bit close to Gastroland there STMO...
And don't be so soft - Ive done Sutton Bank in a 1.2 Corsa B, four up - including 17 stone of me and 15 stone of brother in law...
(though I think I set a new record for most gearchanges in a single journey...)

My Astra SE is a 1600 and is not great at pulling away from lights. Not bad car if I did higher mileage in it I would have gone for the GTC. Only done 1400 miles since January. Only getting 27 mpg on these short journeys and it is an Auto.

I've done 5000 miles since May, Phil. I'm actually getting used to anticipating hills and the like and being low enough down the box to keep up speed. Plus, as I've said, 40mpg.
-
On board computer says 27mpg but the petrol seems to last a long time. I was filling up the Omega every 10 days or so.

I do like the shape of the new Astra and for a 'load lugger' the estate is more aesthetically pleasing than most.

I suspect this is likely to be an optimistic figure. :-\ I can't imagine car manufacturers allowing computers that show a figure worse than the reality.

Ellesmere Port are already tooling up for the 2016 model, so bargains to be had soon.

I haven't got the dubious luxury of a fuel computer, but I trust my brim-to-brim method more.

Fooking hell....it seems to me that 'the old model' has only been available for five minutes.

Likely to be more accurate.

The 'around town' figure of 40mpg is very good, but the advertised 60mpg on the motorway is way too optimistic. It might just be achievable at a constant 55mph, but at around 75 you get no more than 42-43.
Btw, to get my 40mpg, there's a lot of short-shifting going on. ;D

I like the look of the GTC model, although the rest of the range aren't bad.The Astra has grown into a surprisingly large car, outwardly at least.Don't know how they're fixed for interior space.

Each new model of car seems to be wearing a 'fat suit' when compared with the last.

That is where the manufacturers are chasing safety stars. The bigger the car the more space and energy dissipation by the crumple zone before the occupants are injured. :y :y :y :y
