Title: Rear Springs!
Post by: Drewomega on 09 September 2015, 10:28:40
Hi Guys! After being over there for 4 months, I started the old girl up, no problems apart from the discs being rusted up again. Took her down the road and gave her an italian tuneup. MOT had run out so booked in. Phone call later saying one of the rear springs has broken again. That must be 4 in as many years. Is there a stronger version out there? as the proper springs seem to be too soft. TIA.

Elite std springs as used with SL are quite soft and given the road conditions are more prone to snapping especially around the pigtails as metal is thinner there.

If you are using SL shocks I would suggest std Elite springs from any decent factor ...recently changed mine as had snapped on NS and found Sachs at around £35 each .KYB seem to have life issues but cannot comment as had them on a previous Elite for well over 3 years with no issues.

Its abit of a lottery really with quality

As above, are you still using the self levelling shocks?

Also where did you source the springs previously?  :)

I wish you all the best sourcing elite springs....

Ex Police springs are stronger and give the about the same ride height as standard,  tend to be hens teeth now though, someone did tell me they fitted some M series BM springs with good results but no idea from which model now.

A lot depends whether you wish to retain the SL feature.

What brand? KYB snapped very early for me, currently have Boge/Sachs on both or mine. Have been lasting well  :y

I was underwhelmed with KYB's longevity, so tend to fit ZF ones (Sach or Boge)

Got APEX -40mm springs on my Elite and the SL still works :)

I have removed the SL shocks for the moment and refitted MV6 BOGE shocks but the ride seems fine to me... depending on the road surface though...
