Title: Degreasing new discs
Post by: relluf on 11 September 2015, 20:11:22
Hi I am fitting new discs and pads to the 2.2 tomorrow, so not sure what is the best option to degrease the new discs, would carb cleaner be ok or should I go buy some brake cleaner?
I am sure there will be an OOF way to do it!
And yes before anyone asks they are a genuine VX disc and pad kit!
Cheers.

Most of those are still going to leave some layer of oily finish, which isn't good for brakes!
I like cellulose thinners, but that's because it's cheap and I have it in stock for painting.

Your best bet is to buy a can of brake cleaner when you order the discs. This will allow you to clean the calipers and other mounting surfaces when doing the job, but not have large amounts of agressive solvent left over.

Or if i'am feeling flush buy a tin of brake and clutch cleaner.

Just don't spill any on your tarmac drive (if you have one). Will go through it like a hot knife through butter.  :y

Right , I have a gallon of petrol and am I right in thinking it evaporates anyway so should not leave any film or residue? Oh and a gravel drive so no tarmac to worry about.
lets hope the rain keeps off.
Thanks for all the input.

You are correct, just get a washing up bowl, put disc in, pour small amount of petrol in,then get your paint brush, and brush petrol all over, take out, stand, allow to dry, fit, repeat to other disc  :y

Very important Man Rule. Any car products bought, whether necessary or not, must look impressive when put on a shelf. The more variants of essentially the same product, the better!

Why not use CRC Bräkleen? Product, which is especially made for this use?

Petrol or cellulose is cheaper per litre than brake cleaner.
