Title: ? speeding ticket
Post by: psychnurse on 05 July 2008, 11:45:22
Just been down to stow to pick up some bits for the other half. Got caught at about85 by police doing checks on M5. Do you think I will get a ticket ? There were others going pat me at the time  ::)

depends on the type of check, sometimes they have someone up ahead that they radio to, to intercept people, and in some cases are targeting vehicles at about 90 upwards

if they see 2 cars and one is going past the other one, but the slower one's going at 85, you'd think they train the radar on the faster car, but you can never know til you look on your doormat for a fine!!

just have to wait and see unfortunately, i'd say its definately a possibility

Those are popping up all over the place -- in patrol vehicles ( marked and unmarked, on motorway flyovers is a favourite location, even some linked to town centre CCTV --- as well as a new squad of VOSA "Enforcement Officers" roaming around

You never know, if it turns out you do get nicked, they may offer you the chance to attend the day awareness course. You pay £90, but you dont get the 3 points, depends on the force, and it's not the speeders choice, they either offer you it, or the £60 and 3 points.  :'(

Did they actually stop you Psychnurse, or was it a mobile camera unit that 'snapped' you?; they do record your number plate, speed, date, time, etc.

If you were stopped were you told that you would be reported for speeding, and if so what speed did they record?

Some years ago motorway police only  generally bothered with any vehicle that was exceeding 90 mph, unless being driven "dangerously" or "recklessly".  However, a new dictate from the Home Office has demanded Police meet new, increased, targets for apprehending speeding motorists,  with individual Traffic officer's now required to be far less descretionary and lenient than before.  Indeed, I'm sorry to say Psychnurse the chances are that if you have been stopped and reported for speeding at 85+ then you will be prosecuted. :'( :'( :'(

If you were not stopped, then you may be ok as perhaps they didn't actually record you speeding.  You will not know for about two weeks; if no letter has arrived by then you probably have escaped a fine / penalty points.

That is because they work on the guideline of prosecuting / issuing a penalty notice when the speed is over by 10%+. :'(

Well perhaps that is true, as I have been stopped 7 times in my 38 year driving history, once for going over double white lines (perfectly safely stated the Officer) but NEVER had any ticket, penalty, points, etc!  Very lucky I must be, although I always knew what to say and how to say it! No did not get stopped. it was an officer with a handheld type device. not a mobile cctv van or anything.

one for hotel 21 - are there hand held ANPRs that could be used in this way by an officer on his own???

definately a police officer and not dvla or traffic survey? my thoughts here are that if there's an officer on his own he'd have a speed detection device and would radio ahead any speeder details to a cop car parked in a layby some distance up the road...

If it was a single officer with a speed gun, and no-one stopped you, then you should have escaped a fine as they were probably targeting faster drivers who would have been stopped.  :y

Got nicked for 98mph on the M4 a couple of years ago. I leaned 2 things...

1. The limit for a discretion over a fixed penalty or court is 96mph. In Wilts anyway.

2. He got me at 850 meters in the dark. Anyone who thinks laser cameras don't work in the dark is mistaken.

5 points, £225 fine.  >:( >:( >:(

BTW, my GPS and his laser agreed exactly.

Nothing would surprise me.

I once tried to keep up with a car, for some reason I had sussed that the speedo had been disconected.  In places I just couldnt keep up with him, and in other places I darnt keep up with him.  He passed 4 motorway junctions and kept going, so what millage is there on a car when delivered. ?

It was a brand spanking new car at that.

A lot of new cars already have a silly mileage on them. I have gone to Kent and Cornwall for cars, London deliveries were common.

Not unusual to deliver a car with over 400 miles on it.

99% were lease cars as well

With up to 70% of my business mileage done on the M4 I can confirm that it was the best motorway for using that type of road to the full.  Many a time my average speed from Bristol to the Staines / M25, once built, turn-off was 100 mph, as it was rare to see a police unit outside of an accident situation.  The M5 around Bristol was the place not to speed!

Would she get done for speeding?

Yes, if it was a female police officer, along with indecent exposure, tarting, reckless driving and a danger to other motorists! ;D ;D ;D ;)

PS I like the miggy in the backgound though! :y

All you boys have missed the obvious points here; going around at speed like that makes one (alright two!) very cold, which will need a lot of warming up later by a  lovely, gorgous, carring, mature thinking man; oh well that counts out all of you lot then!                        ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Just realised Lizzie's age range requirements.

-30 to +5 her own age

So if based on equality that makes Lizzie too old for me as the age range I will be looking for woulld be

17 to 52 as I am 47

Got nicked for 98mph on the M4 a couple of years ago. I leaned 2 things...

1. The limit for a discretion over a fixed penalty or court is 96mph. In Wilts anyway.

2. He got me at 850 meters in the dark. Anyone who thinks laser cameras don't work in the dark is mistaken.

5 points, £225 fine.  >:( >:( >:(

BTW, my GPS and his laser agreed exactly.

You do not want to know how fast I have been on the M4 when I used to deliver cars!

now there's a job i could do!
now there's a job i could do!

Tried it m8 worked for local Vx dealer pay is s***e min wage driving all over Eng/Sco & Wales, if you were lucky, you got train back so had relaxing return journey, but driving 600m in one day was too much every day if you had a return car !! :( Was good in the new Vectras but mainly Astras was what I delivered.. :-/

Did it in D E F years as a part time fill in job staterd at £1.50 an hour finished at £1.75 an hour, still on various benefits which I was still entitled to.

I enjoyed the train trip part of the job but not the 1.2 Ashtray nor 1.8 carb Carlton part.

Favourite cars were the 2.0 Carltons - they wound up well and handled well

Yes lovely cars Martin, and well missed.  I was lucky enough to enjoy Company provided brand new examples of a 2.0 GLS then 2.0 CD's auto's.Fast and Smashing!  The 3.0 CD Senator I also enjoyed of course I consider as just a souped up Carlton and even better! :y :y

I did originally have a 1986 (Mk1) 1.8 Carlton, also a Company car and we loved that so much I bought it and only sold it on in PX in 1998. Loveley to work on, with all the engine very accessible.  Did most jobs on it, including a complete engine overhaul at 180K. :y

At about 4 am on the M62  foot to the floor (Lancs /Yorks border) you can nearly take off up there if the winds right LOL ! ;) highest M/way in England ::)
Good old Windy Hill near Little house on the prairie! Stuggle up in the truck but can be braking @ 70+ going back down with 44t pushing you through the limiter.
