Title: Calling all BMW 5 series owners '59 - '13 plate
Post by: Crazycarzowner on 12 September 2015, 14:45:03
Well I got into work last night & looked at the board where all the BMW keys are hung and in the comments box was the narrative 'Recalled & checks carried out'  ??? ??? ??? ???

When I inquired as to why I was told that BMW had recalled them to check the rear chassis for stress fatigue and in some places cracks appearing.  ::) ::) ::)

BMW's eh?!?!?!?!

The local dealer has a big sign outside that witters on about "The value of perfect engineering."

I wonder how they'll justify the value of a damaged timing chain on a 3500mile old engine?

The same has been a problem on the 3 series from the E36 through E46 at least (I thought the E92 was meant to be immune) - on either M3's (with stiffer rear suspension & more power putting more loading through the rear subframe mounting points) or cars driven by people with no mechanical sympathy..

..so which group do Plod belong in, are you driving M cars or just driving with no mechanical sympathy? ;)

I believe it can be found in the dictionary between shit and syphilis ;D

Joking aside, does this issue affect 3 series of the same generation? Only asking as brother has a '62 335d saloon :-\

I did a little research - there are nowhere near the number of reports from the E9x as from the E46 & E36 but let's not forget they are much newer.. but yes, there are reports of cracks around the mounting points for the rear subframe (stress fractures actually).

There were recalls for the E46 up to 100,000 miles for cars with FSH, so far nothing like that for the E9x series.  In a non-M 3-series it only seems to affect people who, erm, drive like gonads, so if your brother drives like a regular person he'll probably be fine.

Let's put it this way - it's known to be "a big problem" in the E46 M3 and said to be "guaranteed" - at 115k mine was still fine so I can only surmise that some people drive a lot harder than I do!
