Title: Spotted Near Swindon
Post by: Growler on 12 July 2008, 21:51:05
As i was going to the Reading meet just noth of Swindon on the A419 at the bottom of Blunsdon hill there was parked up on the central reservation what i thought was a speed camera van. The traffic came to a stop due to the roadworks that is taking place there at the moment and as i inched along i noticed a police officer looking at all the cars whilst talking into his radio. It turns out the van was running the Reg check thing looking for un-taxed un-insured cars, the scarey thing was they were doing a brisk trade  :o a car full of young lads were looking rather sorry for themselves as i inched past.

Good!  >:(

Having their cars taken off them is a very small punishment in my opinion.....

I had a motorcycle cop follow me most of a mile after one of those vans a couple of years ago!  OK, so I was in a ratty J-reg Rover 214 that really looked like it shouldn't pass MOT.  ::)  In fact I didn't even bother trying the next year, just drove it straight to the scrapyard.  ;)

Once the database search came back he turned around and left me alone.  :y ;D

Sounds good to me.  Untaxed and uninsured drivers are an absolute menace to all us legit motorists.  If they are breaking those rules, what else are they are up to; no MOT, unroadworthy and therefore dangerous vehicle, unregistered (stolen from factory, etc) vehicle, etc, etc. >:(

Let the police catch all of them and may the courts impose realistic penalties!  :y :y

I agree with you Lizzie -- another way to look at it is that those of us who do pay are also paying a premium to "cover" those who don't -- in theory, if everyone paid their dues -- the burden on each of us should be lighter

The metal processors next to where I work are doing a roaring trade in cars, and not just old bangers. This week I have seen a rather nice clean looking S reg Vectra Estate, an X reg Peugot, several BMW 3 series, and assorted others. THing is quite a few do get driven up and just left, so they are basically road worthy, yet we are scrapping them. Its a strange world !

I get stopped and questioned all the time when back in the UK, and its not because I flaut the law.  When stationned in Germany you technically export the car and have it BFG'd, given a new set of plates and registered on a different system to the DVLA although its a UK number!
Guaranteed a stop at Dover Port by the Customs fellas (a quick flash of the ID card sorts that one out) but when caught by ANPR it always takes a while as coppers have no idea what BFG is....  >:(

I did that on one, and am now undoing it on another.  Does that make me even?  :-? :)

It's the flavour of the month at the mo ---- lots of forces are targetting tax, insurance and MOT evaders

Easy 'clean up' on those offences; must look good on the force/Home-Office stats.! ::)

I think the first M.o.T's came about in 1960 .Only needed for cars 10 years and older. No wonder we had cars running around with the canvas showing through their tyres. :o :o :o

Don't remember there ever being a 10 year testing scale (sure it was always 3 years due to the limited life of cars in those days, but anyway even in 1971 MOT's were a doddle to pass.

My 11 year old Austin A40 (this 1960 car had at least 3 previous MOT's that came with it) passed at SG Smith's Garage in Downham, Bromley, with cross members under both passenger and driver seats rotted away, sills filled with newspaper and covered by painted aluminum.  When you jacked the car up, if the jacking point held, the floor panels, wheels, engine, stayed on the floor whilst the body itself lifted up!  During it's MOT the car was just lifted on a ramp, an inspector taped the unside of the chassis with a little hammer, then after taking the vehicle out and testing it with a brake meter, along with a visual inspection of lights, wipers, horn, tyres, etc., he simply said "It's passed darling!"  ;)  For a broke 17 year old, who was just about keeping the engine and running gear going herself by often laying under it, over it, in the dark, during freezing cold or wet weather and soaked to the skin, they were wonderful words  ;D ;)

Safety just did not come into it! ;)   Indeed it was common for such cars to be legally travelling the streets, and if they hit something just simply fall apart panel by panel, wheel by wheel!  We were young though, and indistructable.  Happy days! ;D ;D ;)

Yes, our Police in North Wales seem obsessed with vehicle crime (surely, nothing to do with 'targets' and easy clean-up rates for the home office stats) ::).....it`s a different thing if you call about another crime issue; "no-one available to come at the moment madam" >:(

Thats a new place for them.....but they do sit around swindon on high volume roads...its not uncommon to see them.

I seem to recall every tuesday morning they sit on the A419 by J15 M4 catching peeps coming of the motorway.

My office tends to let all drivers know where they are incl the speed safety vans.....not that we break speed limits in untaxed vehicles  ::) ;D
