Title: Maintainance guides + related sections
Post by: Jimbob on 07 July 2008, 08:56:02
Dunno about you, but now the FAQ's Tech Info and Maint guides are getting quite large, it can take a bit of browsing to find what you are looking for, also can be intermedating   for newbies to be told to look in the sections....

I know there is a proposed merge of these sections, but how about an index (either before or after merge)

Ie create a sticky, with an index of all the how2's with clickable links.

I would happily create it if anyone thinks there is enough interest.
Obvious extra workload for admin that whenever they move a new how2 into the section that they also update the sticky, but don't think that is a big problem.

Any newbies joining with a q, they could just be given the link to the index, much easier to then find the paperclip test etc.

I think some form of title description would make a serch easier as well.

Petrol
Diesel
LPG
All

Service
Replacement
Upgrade
How to

Interior
Underbonnet
Under Car
Exterior

Mechanical
Body Work
Electrical

My theory is, add one word from each list as you go down each group, then add a simple descrition on the end.

Example

All - Replacement- Iterior - Electrical - CCRT 700

All - Service/Replace - Exterior - Mechanical - Auto Box Oil & Filter

Diesel - Service - Underbonnet - Mechanical - Injector

Shame the forum didnt auto update as they could go in alphabetical order, or for the odd ones that get added they could be moved ito the order.

Planned after merge ;)

Better descriptions do  help, and 'admin controlled' thread (ie guides) do tend to have better descriptions.

As to the titles you suggest, the titles would get too long, hence the index thing being planned :y

I am by no means a computer technical type person but the above highlight is, I think, the basic stumbling block of the matter.

At present, its all admin updated and its logged by creation time.  I dunno if the software allows an automatic alphabetical configuration, but I suspect not.

If not and it requires manual configuration, then thats not just half an hour of a day whilst having your breakfast at the computer......   :o
