Car failed its Mot today.Sheet reads,Suspension arm has excessive play in a ball joint nearside front.Exhaust has major leak of exhaust gases[rear silencer].Brake pipe excessively corroded nearside rear.So I asked for a price to sort ball joint and brake pipe, figuring I could bodge/source a used back box.Price to supply/fit balljoint and supply fit brake pipe £190! Not a chance,no way am I paying that much for it.If I can't bring it in a lot lot cheaper then it's on a one way trip to breakers yard!!

Ball joint is a tenner, and can be changed in situ with careful use of a grinder :y ideally geometry will need checking, but if last years mileage is anything to go by, not an urgent matter...
Back box £40, might as well budget for complete, from ETS for about a ton...

Is brake pipe corroded or will a wire brush and grease sort it?
-
That's sort of what I was figuring [although wasn't sure of balljoint price]and a bit of brake pipe can't be that expensive either.Failure sheet says excessively corroded,so I'm assuming too far gone to be left as is with a bit of a clean up.But as said brake pipe ain't that expensive surely?

By the way whilst driving or even stood near the car with it running you can't hear the exhaust blowing, apparently it's gone on the front face where the two exhaust pipes run into the back box, hence why I didn't know it'd gone when I was doing lights levels etc checks the other day.

That's a fixa uppa :y Although it mite be a little costly it does
take away the hassles of repairing it yourself .. :y

Talking to a few acquaintances about this and they suggested another local garage, bloke who runs it started out as a Vauxhall trained technician and after a few years changed dealerships and became a Citroen trained technician[not saying either of these are a great recommendation, just a bit of background]before finally setting up on his own, anyway I was told he did good quality work at reasonable prices.Dropped the car off at his place this morning with fail sheet asked him to have a look and let me know a price. An hour later he called and quoted supply/fit balljoint,supply/fit brake pipe and weld up back box £100,now that's a lot better!Gave him the go ahead there and then, getting car back at end of week. :y

See, not so bad afterall :y

It wasn't the failure sheet that was so bad[quite decent really]just the cost of fixing a ball joint and brake pipe. They would've charged me £190+£27 test fee=£217+I'd have to fix back box myself. Now it's come to £100+£27 test fee=£127 all in job done, that's near on half the cost. The higher quote was from the garage who tested the car and who I've used to mot my cars for the last 20yrs!!!!!

Perhaps next time they won't be so quick to find fault... ::)

you need a MOT station that doesn't do repairs ;)
