Title: One for EMD (welding)
Post by: Webby the Bear on 02 November 2015, 18:18:14
So, I started welding a couple of years ago.

And I stumbled upon a pic of my first ever welds.....  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/first%20welds%20003_zps4eradayv.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/first%20welds%20003_zps4eradayv.jpg.html)

I had to weld some 0.6mm car body panels today so thought id take a quick photo of my beads now compared to then. remember this is VERY thin stuff and the Clarke welder is great but id say you really have to get the settings bang on for it to weld nicely. but not bad for a first run on thin stuff in two years.
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/thin%20metal%20weld_zpsidbstdgk.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/thin%20metal%20weld_zpsidbstdgk.jpg.html)

these thin car panels are tricky and involves ''stitch'' or ''pulse'' welding....which just means a lot of on/off welding to let things cool down. but this weld had good penetration with no holes burned.

my favourite is welding bearing races.....max settings, high wire speed and blasting so much heat through they just knock out with a hammer  :y

so steve. time to share yours!  ;) :y :y :y

Thanks Davie. its not the prettiest but its got really good penetration and as said, no burn through!

its taken me two years of fairly consistent welding to get acceptable welds. that's why I don't trust these forums where they say ''you should be putting out half decent welds in 30 minutes from first ever picking up a gun''  ??? now either theyre bull sh*tting or im really dang slow learner ;D but I can now take a piece of metal and weld it with no probs  :y

Some people pick I up quick. I'm not one of them. Your a better welder than me, that's a nice one  :y

its took a long time mate!  ;D

thing with welding is you tend to blast it  with a grinder anyway so as long as the metal sticks two pieces then grind it and its job done  ;D

my first attempts on a car (about a year ago now) looked similar to the first pic. mainly cos id never welded overhead before....now that's difficult!

Nice mate. Get a flap disc for nice finishes

Aye got a fair few of those and used them accordingly  ::) It is handy having a welder for just a few little jobs . Got to weld a support bar onto a work bench sometime as the bench is collapsing under the weight of spares  ::) Do need a mig welder though , arc blows through most thin gauge stuff ive tried .

it will do mate. arc, as far as I know, is more for structural / critical projects. mig or tig is the way forward for thin thin stuff  :y

I found if your careful you can quick tack thin gauge but its never very pretty until its cleaned up with a grinder/flap wheel  :) I wouldnt risk say stick welding in new rear arches but would be confident welding with mig  :)

thing with welding is you tend to blast it  with a grinder anyway

Only when you're doing a non visible finish ;)

You might get a kick out of some of the pictures here, though: https://instagram.com/weldporn/

If that's the case, you need a lot more practice! You should should never grind a weld, but it's often necessary on car body work to hide the join on external panels. Welding under the car is best left alone.

Lol I never said I was an expert. I still have lots to learn. On the welding and the auto repair front  :y
