In the 2.2 in stop/start traffic, the brake pedal makes a "creaking sound" quite badly, almost soft knocking sound too when releasing. Been doing it for a while, but steadily getting worse.
Slow speed stuff, so say 10mph, applying brake pedal can hear creaking/rubbing sound. Same with releasing the pedal after coming to a stop, sounds like almost something is rubbing :-\
Hard to describe, but when releasing can also hear/feel slight knock through the pedal. :-\
It's definitely not disc related or outside. It's to do with pedal or something behind the dash. So much so can hear it above the radio now. :(
Any ideas?

Any play on the pedal? Might simply be a worn support bush or return spring... Both easily replaced.
However could also be a sign of rot/cracking in the bulkhead...
Remove the lower dash trim from above the pedals, peel back the carpet and insulation from around the pedal brackets and check closely.
Any noise from the clutch pedal? Part of the same assembly...
-
Play as in side to side & free movement? I'll check.
Clutch is silent, it's only the brake pedal.
I'll strip down and take a look, will the rot/cracking easily be seen?
-
If it's only the brake pedal, then it's probably not the bulkhead... There will be a support bush through which the hinge bolt locates...
Cracks etc should be plain to see, but might be obscured by the pedal bracket :y

Are you sure it isn't the pedal/leg interface?
He may look youthful but he is getting on a bit ::)

Going by the fact I'm looking at XJ TDVi's as a possible replacement, just give me a flat cap now :P ;D

Don't get me wrong, they're a fantastic looking car ...... but XJs have put a lot of timber on over the years, especially at the back end.

Drove home today, all silent. Had climate set nice and toasty on the way in, wonder if its heat related. :-\

Must admit my 1995[X300]XJ is closer to the original shape, but if going for another Jag then the X350 is as far as I'd go.I just don't like the newer Jags at all.

Likely to be pivot or the spring itself, depending on noise

My Saloon has always done this, click, click, click, click as you push it down. Never managed to solve.
