Title: New/different car
Post by: STEMO on 25 November 2015, 11:57:26
I quite often read on here about folk trying new/different cars and disliking them straight away. I find that I hardly ever 'like' a different car when comparing it to what I am/have been driving. Surely it just takes a bit of time before you get used to it?
It takes me, personally, a good three months to start driving a car as second nature. Just knowing where everything is, navigating around the cockpit whilst thinking about something else, 'knowing' your car.
I thought my 1.4 was gonna have to go...because I couldn't get it to go  ;D But, now I'm used to it, I appreciate the way it should be driven and I'm fine with it.
On the wife's megane, the gearstick is too far forward......for me. Wifey thinks it's fine because she is used to it.

I think three months is about right before you start pulling a car to bits.

You are an old duffer though!  Takes you piss soaked folk a bit longer than us young 'uns to get used to something new!  ;D

The average OOFer only needs to look at the ebay listing to pull a car to pieces.  ::)  ;D

I don't think so. I think we have more patience and are more discerning. For instance, I wouldn't be seen dead in a souped up vectra.  :)

I like to replace every year for a different make then go round in circles back to an Omega  ::)
Although this time the Omega is going under wraps to save me looking for another  ::)

It generally takes me quite a while to decide what I want next and to find the one that "speaks" to me,then only a day or two to get used to it.I must admit that if I were to contemplate spending into the thousands[which I haven't got]on any car I'd be tempted to hire one for a week to see how I got on with it before parting with any serious brass.

Oh, I can understand that Uncle Steve.  People of your vintage tend to prefer a more sedate (slow), less comfortable (rock hard), smaller version of the Vectra.  ;D

I much prefer my Omega to the Signum. Hard to say exactly why.

The Omega with the Signum lump would have been nice.

I do think the Astra that Steve drives is a  fine looking car.

With a proper engine I could be tempted. :)

Really  :o :o

I had a 6000 mile Corsa sri 1.4 turbo as a hire car for all last week
Under steers like a bitch and pretty gutless too if its in 5th or 6th and you are bellow 70 ish.
As for small car economy, I never beat 37mpg and that was 99% motorway   :(

I don't know if the turbo was a optional extra for hire cars or I had a dodgy one but this one was shite

Oh yeh, it doesn't like going into 3rd when trying to change down to 6th from 5th  ::) :-X :-[ :-[

Standard Corsa one is 100bhp, the Astra is 148bhp (although there a poverty version at 123bhp), very very different  :y

Your changing down the box, ie into a lower ratio gear  ::)
To do this on a 6 speed box, you move the stick up / forwards from 6th (to the right of 4th) to 5th (to the right of 3rd)  ::) ::)
