My widowed sister has moved near me, and I maintain her 2OO7 Meriva for her. Mileage is 52,000, and there is no reason to assume the cambelt is not original. Is changing it broadly similar to changing an Omega belt?

Think they're 100,000 or ten years, Terry. My 57 astra was.

How is the drivers side engine mount fixed to the engine?
I have only done two wrong wheel drive belt changes - SWMBO's Golf required support of the engine so that the engine mount could be removed because the belt loops around it - my mk2 Astra was so long ago I cannot remember whether I had to take the engine mount off or not :-\ it was SOHC and the most fiddly part I can remember was rotating the water pump to set the belt tension ???

Similar to changing a 4 pot Omega although you need to remove the wheel arch liner, support the engine and pop an engine mount off.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. I changed the head gasket on my daughter-in-law's Rover Streetwise in January. That was front wheel drive and involved removing an engine mounting; also had wet cylinder liners too, and an alloy block. I have a Haynes manual for the Meriva and the job sounds similar. Haynes quoted maker's recommendation is 10 years or 100,000 miles but adds sooner might be a good idea. All Haynes jobs seem dificult, but he is just being concise yet comprehensive. OOF maintenance guides are much more mechanic friendly, and have encouraged me to attempt jobs I did not dare do before.
I think I will put it off for now, and do it when I am bored.
