Title: Gunk on the oil cap.
Post by: dazza88 on 10 December 2015, 19:02:10
Hi all, as you know I picked up a 2.6 omega been driving it to and back from work for 3 days now 4 days tomorrow;-) it has sat around since September after m.o.t as the last owner couldn't be asked To put a crank sensor on her,  but any way I've cleaned the gunk of the oil cap on Tuesday and checked it after work today and there is a little bit of gunk there not much but a bit could it be just were it sat around or the really bad cam gaskets leaking every were I'm not sure, runs and drives lovely fans kick in when just over half way also been checking the oil on the dipstick and also looks and feels ok it's pretty fresh oil still. Any one else had this problem thanks all  :y

It's usually because short(ish) trips specially in colder season. I had it on my mv6 turing fall/winter/spring when my worktrip was about 3 miles. All clear in summertime.

Mayo on filler cap is a sign of short journeys, or castrol oil. Change the oil n filter, use a decent oil (gm) and give it a good run. This is assuming, no sludge in header, if so then oil cooler time.

Yep, don't worry about it, as long as the dip stick is clean. Tends to be worse this time of year as well, cold damp etc.  ;)

Sweet thank you, it's also in the oil flum bit as well but will take off at weekend and clean it, but at least that puts my mind at rest plus just spend 80 something on the cam cover gasket kit from vx am going to ring serek up tomoz to see when can squeeze her in  :y

Check all your breather pipes as well . If its been abused then they are likely to be blocked , especially the small pin hole to the breather box .

Good news after a weeks drive about 25miles a day to and from work I checked the cap and the oil flume today on the cap there was still a little bit but not as much as last time I checked, but the flum bit has only got a little bit up the top apart from that there's hardly any in there the complete flum was full of it around the edges so happy days  :y also cam are getting done Wednesday, then Thursday she will get a service.  :y

I tend to do a lot of short journeys too. I followed advice on here to remove the filler neck and put the cap direct onto the cam cover instead, and that either reduces the amount of mayo produced or just ensures it gets washed off and burnt away quicker.

Still get some under the cap but nowhere near as much as before.

I mite be wrong here but if your doing short journeys then if you have the filler neck on then at least you can wipe away the gunk BUT if you take the neck away then that would push more gunk into the breather system ?  :-\

That's about the size of it ;)

Best dig out my filler neck, then! It's not doing much in a box, in a box, in my old bedroom at my parents house!  ;D

The emphasis being on the can of course.

If memory serves the rationale behind the suggestion before was that the neck sticks up in the air thus not getting so hot hence generating extra condensation/mayo rather than just being a depository for the normal amounts. Sounds sensible but could just as easily be small round things.

Of course the real answer is don't do short runs in a big old bus, but as we know that's not always a practical suggestion.

The appearance of the mayo is just a sign that there's been water vapour in the crank case. Without the filler neck, it gets washed off by oil flung onto the back of the cap by the camshaft. It doesn't in any way change the conditions inside the engine, and wiping that small amount of may off with make no difference.

The main thing to do, especially if doing lots of short trips in cold weather, is to make sure the breathers are clear and keep oil changes reasonably regular.
