Title: David Bowie R.I.P.
Post by: Migv6 le Frog Fan on 11 January 2016, 06:55:18
Just been announced that David Bowie has died after an 18 month battle with cancer. Very shocking indeed.
Loved his early work.  :'(

:( Real shock, just after his birthday and releasing a new album. Personally glad he was able to leave us with a bit more music before he went.

Ashed to ashes, as he once said...  :'(

Another legend gone. :'(

Problem is, we're not creating legends of this magnitude any more, IMHO so, when they're gone, they're gone.

So very true. The music business doesn't seem to allow for really creative people like that to flourish these days - if they are actually around at all.
I had a lot of respect for the way he created styles / fashions etc. and then already moved onto something else by the time everyone else started to catch up.
I know a couple of people who met him years ago, and both said he was a really nice genuine fella.
R.I.P. Ziggy.

Picasso of Pop and Rock music, the man was born before he's time in my view. RIP David Jones.

Seen him a few times Live in my late teens, excellent performer, when people used to do things live.

The trouble with programmes such as X-Factor and The Voice etc. is that these acts are classed as stars before they have actually done anything of note. All the real stars, (such as Bowie) had to go through their early careers playing small venues to get their breaks. Breeds character does that.

Filters out the no-hopers and one-hit wonders too. :y

Putting a positive spin on it, he lived longer than expected...   ...look how ill he looked in the 70s on a diet of "stuff".

Never a big fan, but some well known stuff over decades. Certainly iconic and flamboyant performer who will be missed by many beyond his fanbase I'm sure.

I think you had to be an 'Album' fan to be a fan of Bowie, rather than he's hit singles.

For me that was the case anyway, loved all his early albums, at least before he went down that US Soul Philadelphia route anyway.

Possibly because I was more a wireless fan, or maybe just a bit before my time  :-\

Missus has just rung and hadn't heard. When did he die? she asked.

Every hour, on the hour, since six o'clock this morning. Kinnell.....

RIP - a true legend.

I was a late comer (Not born) to his music, but I loved the early stuff. I have been hammering them over the last month or two anyway. It's a shame and a loss.

RIP...sad when anyone goes. :(
However, I was not a fan of his, did not like his music at all. Only know one song and that was 'Under Presure' singing with Queen.
Sorry Mr Bowie....but I absolutely hated that Ziggy Stardust stuff and the outfits.
Have to say it how it is. :)

Yep, you can't pick at Bowie albums. Start to finish. That said, he had some massive singles all the same.

He went through so many styles of music that most people are probably at home with at least some of his repertoire.

I bought Blackstar immediately after I heard the news and listened to it on the way home last night - I thought, at the time, that there were some stand-out bits and some mediocre bits..

Later on I watched the videos for Blackstar and Lazarus which, when you know that he made the album as a "parting gift", are fantastic (if rather sad).

Not a great fan but respect where respect due, the man and his backing band from Hull  :D the spiders from mars did some brilliant stuff  :y :y

Remember reading this a couple of years ago.
Gives a interesting insight into life with bowie during his spiders from mars phase  ;)

 http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/dr-steve-mccabe/spiders-from-mars-demise_b_3530912.html

Got dragged out to see Woody Woodmansey and Tony Visconti's band Holy Holy at a packed out Welly club in Hull last summer covering some of the early Bowie stuff like Man who sold the world etc,
a good night out.. I felt 12 again if only for a couple of hours  ;D

Trevor Bolders old man had a record shop 10 minutes from our house.
The missus apparently met Bowie and the rest of the lads in there one dinner time while skiving from work.
She still giggles about it today  ::)

Don't have any of his albums but he was a talented artist however you measure such things...

Hard not to be cynical about the coverage when you get the likes of that wannabeidiot Jo Whiley piling on the snivelling smarm by the gallon... And if I hear that bloody gnome once more I will be most homicidal >:(

That said he clearly knew what was coming and the last album is as much Bowie as his first. The groundbreaking artists of his generation will never be replaced, but then nor will the world that made them. :'(
