Title: Marks on windscreen
Post by: tigers_gonads on 13 January 2016, 15:49:04
I've had 2 sweep marks on the windscreen since I bought the car.
Normally, its not to bad but with the low sun of winter, these marks are getting right on my tits  >:(

Before I seek a lorry to kick up a stone and claim on the insurance  :-X :-X, would a good dose of G3 compound and 5 minutes with a machine polisher help or would this stuff totally shag the screen ?

You can get glass polish for the job.

I'd have thought the glass would be as hard as nails, so G3 probably won't touch it. It might leave a residue that'll smear for ever, mind.

I've used the Autoglim glass polish before by hand but nothing on this scale.
There is also some Cerium Oxide based stuff on ebay.
Anybody used this stuff before ?

From jewellers rouge(I had 5 kilos of the stuff in a bag, it looked like a special delivery from Colombia!) through to a commercial polishing system when I worked for a window company.

Everyone of us that tried polishing glass made things worse.

it's only what we've come to expect from insurance companies. It doesn't seem that long ago that the excess was nothing, then it was £25 ..... and it's just up little by little over the years, but £100 is the most I've heard of. And they often say that unless you go to Acme Autoglazing that they have connections with, then they'll only pay so much regardless of the total. And then when the glazing 'techs' have fubar'd rain & light sensors on the new screen & they can't get them working, the insurance company want nothing to do with footing the cost of getting someone who knows what he's doing to sort it.

I wonder what mine is?  :-\ :-\

I have a bag of Cerium Oxide in my garage, used it many times to refurb headlights, and,to get scratches out of screens. Usual rules apply, keep lubricated and don't spend too much time in one place. Has worked for me.   :y

Once a year, I clean the screen with Bar Keepers Friend. It's an abrasive powder that doesn't scratch. Always had excellent results and it's useful for all kinds of household stubborn cleaning jobs.
