do any members carry any tools in the boot as a precautionary measure. spanners, sockets etc & what sizes. :-\ :)
-
A thread I started but a few days ago might be of use, in answering this..>

Personally I've got the lot, trolley jack, my Halfors 170 piece, toolkit, long breaker bar everything but my axle stands! But I'd very much like to shrink that all down a bit, as per the above thread, as much of it is surplus :)
-
Best way to make sure you're covered in an omega is to carry a little card with 'AA' written on it. :)

Green Flag membership card & a mobile phone ;) ;)
-
Everything bar the kitchen sink in the estate I am using. That includes trolley jack, and axle stands. Problem is, I can barely lift the tool box, the socket sets are almost as heavy, and if I swap to one of the others for distance use, all the aforementioned gets swapped too !!!!!!!!!
I must be totally mad ;D ;D ;D

A crank sensor.
If going away for a couple of days, Halfords 200pc socket set, and various pliers etc.
-
With the Omega being so reliable are tools really necessary? :)

That.
I have a small socket set in the car simply because it was spare and fits in the spare wheel, and the "My Naff Code Reader" connector in the glovebox because I'm only ever going to use it on the car.
Otherwise, it's the car's jack screwed to the back panel and a 600mm breaker bar with a 17mm socket so that I can fit the full-size spare wheel if I ever get a puncture.
-
Trouble with breakdown services is they are all completely useless.
No idea why a spend all that money every year, as invariably we sort ourselves out when something goes wrong. Faster, easier and not dealing with dickheads.

I have complete faith in my old girl! :y and thus much like Nick all I carry is a 600mm breaker bar with a 17mm impact socket and short extension as the supplied wheelbrace is shite! ::)
Oh and the phone number of Rescuemycar.com! :P

I have to spend it so that wifey has at least a fighting chance if she breaks down. Otherwise, I would have to go and rescue her, and I'll be too busy....probably.

That's why I have it. But last time she broke down and I wasn't around, she didn't bother, and walked home, after diagnosing the fault herself.

AA membership, not necessarily to fix or diagnose anything, simply to get it dragged home... so that I can fix the bloody thing ::)
-
No..too.much trouble to carry tools......breakdown,recovery,,me and 5 others to my destination or home....if destination and then car kaput.....buy another omega £300...or home and sort it out,,,if that fails..buy another omega at home £300 and job done..no probs. ;D ;D ;D
-
Keep a map of all the nearest breakers handy :)

+1
The last breakdown we had was 150 miles from home on a Sunday afternoon.
On any other day of the week the 1st AA man would have supplied and fitted an alternator and that would have seen us safely home. (As it was the 2nd AA man temporarily fitted a fully charged battery and tailed us for 75 miles and the 3rd carried us the remainder of the way on a recovery truck).

That's all I've ever wanted from it.
Knowing that it can be sorted with one phonecall to a known number is worth a few quid all by itself.
After all, if you breakdown at 03:00 237miles from home, who would you ring?

Problem is that it can cost a few quid to get towed off a motorway and it's bound to be dark / snowing / raining when you do break down!
I have always carried a crank sensor in every Omega I've owned, what I didn't carry up until one actually failed was the correct socket and ratchet!

£150 to take you to a place of safety off the motorway; paid upfront. More if the vehicle doesn't roll. You are unlikely to get a choice of destination, and the contractor doesn't have to take you any further even if you are prepared to pay the extra.
You'll get national recovery for considerably less than that and know you'll get home.

This... If its something I can't deal with at the side of the road. Otherwise it's just the usual amount of tools in the boot :y

Agreed, it's the 'get you and your vehicle home' reason that I have RAC cover for our cars.

yup got a load of tools but no crank sensor so note to self must add one :y

Yep, same here. :y
I chose AA relay as a few years back a lot of outfits would only take you to a garage within ten miles, which is no good when you have a caravan on the back.
Getting us and the car home is my biggest priority, I can deal with the car in my own time then. :y

Be careful with AA relay .. they have some weird rules/restrictions on caravans, weights and lengths .. all buried in the small print. One that I remember, and why I moved .. if the car breaks down they will recover it, and (mostly) the caravan .. but if the caravan breaks down ... lets say a puncture that damages the hub/bearing whatever) they won't .. the 'van is only recovered if "towable" behind the broken down car on a transporter.
That is why I changed to Green Flag through the caravan club Mayday policy ... car and van covered at all times, will take me to the holiday and back if it can't be fixed, no problems on length or weight. With "personal cover" we are also both covered in anyone elses car as well ...
HTH :)

Cheers for that Nige but I've actually got it in writing as I was aware of what you are saying, and as it was a large caravan I was concerned regarding their recovery rules. It was Green Flag that I left because of the ten mile business, but not Mayday admittedly, and it was a few years back now. :y We've sold our caravan now but others may need to heed your warning. :y
I have it writing that if the car fails they will recover the car and tow the van, or if the van fails and they can get it on a flatbed they will recover the van and we follow in the car. Sounds easy, but as you know, the caravan would probably be towed on a greased ball and me having a piece of paper may count for jack in reality. :-\

Having seen this from the other side, I have to agree with Nigel; if you tow a caravan, sort your recovery through the Caravan Club as it gives you a load of extra features that 'ordinary' Green Flag cover doesn't give. Things like returning your caravan to a different address to your car, or taking your rig to your holiday destination and taking you home afterwards.
