Currently the last remaining two cross-channel hovercraft are sitting where they came to final rest at the Hovercraft Museum in Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire. However, the museum does not own them, and as the recent culmination of a long running legal dispute between the owner for the last 16 years and the previous landowner, they have now become the property of the Homes and Communities Agency.
The HCA now wants to demolish these historic and iconic pieces of British transport heritage to make way for housing. The craft cannot be moved due to their size and because they have been neglected by their prior owner and have had their engines removed. Only one of the craft actually sits on an area where new buildings are to be built, and yet the HCA is intent on destroying both. The museum would love to take ownership and restore the one craft that would not affect the land set aside for development, the Princess Anne, to its former (but non-operational) state for the benefit of the nation.
But their hands are tied. The HCA has given them only a day to come up with a workable proposal. This is not enough time to develop a sensible plan.

Sounds fairly typical. Noting can be allowed to get in the way of the march of new housing, in the eyes of most planners, it seems. :(

The hoverport at Calais, is now a no go area, to many bloody migrants hanging around waiting to pounce, gendarmerie clear it every day :(

Quite a few issues there.
As a nation we should preserve one hovercraft. We are(were) world leaders at inventing things and should be proud of that. One day is ridiculous to come up with a plan.
Like it or not the UK is desperately short of housing particularly in England. Short of moving business to other parts of the UK , the only solution is to embark on a massive building programme (not the pittling little programme of this government). The land has to come from somewhere. If only we had visionaries in charge to come up with a decent world beating programme to take Britain forward. Undersea pods, underground/blended with landscape, new housing on as yet unreclaimed land etc.
I have not so fond memories of crossing the channel by hovercraft. Free orange juice and newspaper. The noise was absolutely unbelievable. :o :o

The UK is not short of housing at all. It has far too many people though. ;)

There are plenty of disused military establishment, throughout the country, which if developed, correctly, would help no end, biggest problem is the nimby's, who run the council's,
we have 3 airfields around here, only 1 is being developed, because the bloody nimby's wouldn't allow re-use for commercial airfreight.

It really would be a shame not to keep one of them at least :'( But one day to sort something out? That's blatantly ridiculous!

Indeed, the craft are surrounded by listed building anyway so not entirely sure what they intend to build anyway!

Agreed :y Or too many people all trying to be in the same place.
More building is not the solution.
