Bit disappointed after everything seemed to be going so well.
Belt changed. Everything spot on. Torqued up and tensioner set as per DVD ie. marker set for new belt.
Engine turned over several times to ensure timing marks spot on.
Found a vacuum pipe split going to bagpipes, repaired.
Unfortunately though, I have noticed the above problem. Sitting in the car I can feel it wobble slightly. Just wondering if I should dissemble again and check that the timing hasn't moved. Don't see why it should have.
Also have a new noise when running on petrol which disappears when I switch over to LPG. A kind of dull ticking noise.
Anyone any suggestions?
-
Dunno about the LPG problem but sounds like injector noise...? but probably not as they switch off when on LPG...?
Anyhoo, check the belt timing, could be out by a tooth, don't rely on the markers on the belt to be 100% accurate...
BTW, have you changed cams too or just belt...?
-
Air leak perhaps, were the 6 large o-rings under the plenum ok?

Belt, tensioner and rollers. Gates kit. Used a sykes pickavant timing tool so not relying on belt markings.

Would possibly hear the air being sucked in maybe...?
but good call... :y

I suppose they looked a bit flat.

When did you last change the spark plugs?
It sounds as though you have an intermittent misfire if the cam timing is spot-on as described.
-
Plugs about 4k ago. Didn't have this issue before belt change.
-
Gonna take it all apart again to check that timing is still as it should be. Hopefully be quicker now that I've done it so recently.
I'm suspecting the air leak if timing is as should be.
If I need new seals does anyone know the part number or better still the best place to order them from? 3.2 year 2002.
Alternatively, can I refurb them by coating in silicon grease. I've heard this will make them swell a bit?
-
Yes, check for air leaks :y
-
If before well fine, I would check the the times of camshafts again.
Sometimes one tooth makes fail on idle
-
Uh oh!
Well, glad I checked again as something has happened.
Firstly, I noticed that the tensioner position has moved. It is now lined up with the marker for an old belt. So does that mean it has tightened itself?
Secondly, I have noticed that there is more than one timing mark on cams 1 and 2. There is a mark in the middle of a tooth and therefore quite a long mark, I'll call that mark L. There is also mark which is between a tooth and therefore quite short, I'll call that mark S. So 2 marks on each cam separated by about 6 teeth.
On my car the timing tool shows that S on cam 1 and L on cam 2 is lined up. This must have been the setup before I changed the belt as I can't believe that 1 has jumped about 6 teeth.
Cams 3 and 4 only have 1 timing mark and line up.
So to summarize, I've got timing marks lining up perfectly but I'm not sure now whether they are the right ones lining up. :(

Can you take a picture? :y

Each cam number should line up with its respective cam. Cams 1 and 2 are straightforward enough but cams 3 and 4 should line up as shown below.
Cam 3 shows the left notch as 3 so line cam 3 to the left notch and cam 4 shows the 4 as the right hand notch so cam 4 should be lined up with the right hand notch.
The last photo is to show cam 4 clearer. I would feed the belt as I said in your other thread. :y
Hope that helps.

OMG! Thank you YZ250. Everything is as it should be then. You don't know what a relief that is. After doing everything by the book I thought I had majorly screwed up! Spent the evening fretting about it. You can see why the extra marks could lead to confusion, for a novice, but this explanation makes it all clear.
Don't know why the tensioner has moved. I thought I had torqued it up properly but you never know. Will set back to the new belt position or do you think I should leave as is, a few mm before the old belt mark, and retorque?
Thanks once again.

If you are re-setting the tensioner to the new belt position I'd just like to stress the importance of holding the adjuster nut while you torque the bolt up. Apologies if it's obvious but it's mega important how you do this to avoid anything working loose. :y
When you adjust the upper offset idler you have to turn the nut anti-clockwise to take up the slack in the belt, and by the sheer nature of this direction it can in turn loosen the bolt. Also, when you torque up the bolt, the clockwise direction can loosen the adjuster so it's critical that you hold the big nut while you torque up the bolt. :y
Well done for doing it yourself, it's not a bad little job really if you take your time and check, re-check and check again. :y
Hope you get it sorted. :y

I've just re-read this and think it's best to make sure that we've understood it correctly. I know what you mean by the short and long notch but have concerns over which cam is set to which notch after re-reading your post. :-\
As James said, can you post up a photo so that we can check at which notch each cam is set to. :y
As for the tensioner, it moves under load so may not always return to the exact position that it was set to. :y

Hi YZ250.
Sorry, my description was wrong in that I mistakenly thought the higher cam was number 1. My cams are set up almost identically to those in your pictures, so I'm happy they're correct.
I would post a picture but have never understood how to do so. Do you have to have your own webspace that you link to?
Off now to check my torques and get the car back together.

Nice one. :y
I just use Photobucket for hosting pictures, it's free and relatively easy to use. :y

Thanks everyone for your input. All back together, correctly torqued and misfire has gone. Now need to sort out my rear rumble noise. Thought it was cheap tyre noise but it's suddenly got much more noticeable.
